History is actually happening right now
I know it sounds cliche but we are actually experiencing history.
I knew it was true from pretty much the second that Barack Obama became a serious candidate for the presidency.
But it's really starting to crystallize for me. I just now realized that probably for the rest of my life I will remember exactly where I was and what I was doing on November 4, 2008. And I will probably tell my grandchildren about it.
Yeah, I have the same thing about September 11. And yes that's an historically relevant event, but FUCK history isn't always about wars or people dying. Sometimes good shit happens too. Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, the Beatles. That's history too. And people need to remember that.
So anyway, not to quote Michelle Obama directly, but I can honestly say that for the first time I can really recall, I am actually proud of this country. To see through all this Maverick Bill Ayres, Joe the Plumber bullshit is not something I expected to happen in such large numbers.
I know that racism is still very much alive in the United States. And I know that there are people who voted for John McCain just because he's white. And you know what? Those people can get the fuck out of my country any time they want.
P.S. Anyone out there in California who's pissed about the prop 8 thing? I, as a lifelong citizen of Connecticut am personally inviting you to come here and marry whoever the fuck you want.
