Several years ago, when my wife and I began searching for a house to buy, we first determined the price range that would fit our meager income and limited resources. Nearly every house we looked at in that range, however, had structural damage of some kind. It was frustrating, but we were able to apply a spiritual lesson to the experience. We knew the importance of a sure foundation from a very practical point of view. Thankfully, the house we finally bought was built upon a rock solid foundation.
When Jesus spoke to his disciples about building a house on a rock instead of on the sand, He was using a very practical and age-old principle to show them and us just how foundational his words are to the Christian faith. The words of Christ are rock solid Truth that, when obediently adhered to and followed, provide protection against the storms of life. No other great teacher has ever or could ever come close to the profound simplicity with which Jesus spoke, nor has any great orator, philosopher, sage, or seer ever approached the depth or the power of his words. They gird us, support us and sustain us through every circumstance in life with peace, comfort, assurance and hope.
We who have believed in Jesus are established in him by his word. His word keeps us from the paths of the destroyer (Ps. 17:4). Hiding his word in our hearts keeps us from sin (Ps. 119:11). His word is a lamp to light the way for us (Ps. 119:105). Oh, how precious is your word, Lord, to me! I am secure by the power of your word. I am kept safe by the protection of your word. I am set upon the rock by the promise of your word. I am sanctified by the purity of your word.
“And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock”.
Thank you, Jesus, for your word.
