So I started this thing as a normal LJ post about a het pairing in Star Trek and my thoughts on it. It grew, and grew, and became this fancy and pseudo-coherent analysis of Kirk/Spock and how their relationship grows and is the main point of the entire movie. And you know, it was actually hella fun to write because I think that in this fandom,

This is very true, but what you seem to have forgotten is that As a 155 year old Vulcan, everyone one of the origional crew members is now dead and gone.
What would you do if after, I'm gonna go with 75 years, of not seeing your very best friend in the entire universe/possible lover of many years, in a cave. Spock Prime, after a lifetime of dealing with Kirk has....mostly embraced quite a few emotions.
I don't condone the fiction written about Kirk and Spock suddenly being bonded through the mind meld, but Spock Prime would have been feeling A HELL OF A LOT OF EMOTION at this time.
With Jim telling him that he and the Spock of this time aren't friends, he would have wanted to let Kirk know that the two of them were indeed old friends.
Okay, so now that I'm done ranting on the subject of mind melding and whatnot.....HOLY HELL GIRL!!! You're a Trek Newbie????? I find this hard to believe. I've been watching Trek since I was born and you have the same amount of knowledge that someone with 20 years of Trek watching has. Wrath of Khan was the best movie of all of them, though I enjoy The Voyage Home for plain cheesy goodness. :3 RICARDO MONTALBAN FTW!!!
This was an excellent essay, pitting the two pairings of New!Trek against each other. The weird ass Uhura/Spock pairing and the OTP Kirk/Spock pairing. The OTP will always win.
That scene on the Turbolift made me nearly throw my bag of popcorn into the air. I was quietly snarling and gnashing my teeth at the audacity of J.J. Abrams for DARING to question the old!skool OTP.

Ahaha yes, it has been less than two weeks since I've seen anything with Star Trek. I vaguely remember Picard but I never watched it. I'm an English major and English teacher, so that's probably why it seems like I know so much because this is just literary analysis but infinitely more fun and loltastic. Plus I'm a dirty cheat and lean heavily on Memory Alpha, like with Spock Prime's age (I am SHIT with math, I had to use a calculator.)
I mean, I guess it's a not-so-bad thing because they didn't make it into a bigger deal, if that makes sense. I mean, they could have started their relationship at the beginning and we could have had the nauseating experience of first kisses and beginning lurve, but instead we're dropped in and I predict that it'll either be dropped or understated in the next movie or they'll use it so that Kirk and Spock will fight each other over a girl, and I hope as HELL they don't do that because that could make me hate it.

I do agree with this statement...HOWEVER, the downloaded porn makes fanfiction that much more interesting. :p Providing it's well written of course.
And I would have liked at least a warning shot across the bow before they just LAUNCH the Hetero!canon into the Spock.Uhura.
And Kirk and Spock fighting over a girl was an actual episode in TOS. It's titled Amok Time and deals with Spock under going Pon Farr. I could certainly go into more detail, but I think I'll just let you wander into that little jewel of wonder by yourself. :D

Oh I saw Amok Time, it was my first episode. I heard about that shit and *zip* I went and watched it on youtube. But see, I don't care about T'Pring because he didn't really know her and she chose Kirk as her champion, and they didn't fight because they both wanted her. OMG, I could count the ways I love that episode forever.
"He does not burn as I do."
"My heart is flame."
"Captain...JIM!"

And I think Amok Time is probably EVERYONE'S favorite episode....except for maybe This Side of Paradise where Spock gets infected with Spores on a planet and kinda loses his logic. He smiles and goes swinging from the trees....somewhat metaphorically that is.
It's an interesting episode. I've taken the liberty of friending you, I hope you don't mind this. :3
