Randomness and Due South love

Jan 12, 2009 23:17

I'm making a bunch of icons, and I actually like a lot of them.  I learned how to do bobblehead animations, so I'm making a few bobbleheads for fun.  I may even let you guys request bobbleheads, because they're not so hard to do and I love y'all.

RANDOM THOUGHT:  WHY HAVEN'T SAM AND DEAN HAD CPR YET?  WTF KRIPKE??

Also, random squee over Due South!  I don't even know why I love this show so much.  Every time I watch it, it gets funnier and funnier because I get jokes that were lost on me or I didn't pay attention to the first time.  I have an unhealthy love for Callum Keith Rennie, because he's a genius and I love Ray Kowalski.  I even love Ray Vecchio because he's funny, big hearted, and a total goof.  I don't even know WHY I love this show so much.  Maybe it's because as I was watching it for the first time, I was falling out of love for a while, and it seemed to really speak volumes about my own life.

I've already done a big pimp post here, but lord, I have so much to add now, lol.

I didn't go into this show thinking I would like it.  kristiinthedark  would go on and on about it, and I passed over it, because it didn't seem interesting at all.  One day I was bored, and SPN was so sad to watch (ah, the 'Dean is about to go to hell' days) and so I downloaded the pilot.  I really liked the pilot (it's on youtube, hint hint).  It was funny and different from a lot of things I watch.  So I decided to give the show a shot.  I laughed a lot, I loved Fraser, and I was completely puzzled as to why people shipped Fraser/Vecchio.  But hey, it was a good show, not a show that would become a fandom for me.  I have lots of shows I watch and enjoy that I'm not attached to.  There was QAF, Heroes, Chuck, etc.  It fell into this category..until I watched the whole thing and suddenly I had a OTP.  Possibly the one OTP that cannot be fucked with, the best OTP.  The show has ended, and it ended with my ship nearly being canon.  Harry Potter ended with the shittiest pairing on earth.  Smallville fucked up its storyline and jumped not one, but several dozen sharks.  Clex isn't even fathomable to me anymore.  Who knows what the future for SPN is, how they might screw it up or make it the best damn show I ever watched.  But Due South is timeless.  I never have to be bitter or angry; I never have to remember 'the good old days' in light of crap.  Many people in SPN fandom and in my own flist are extremely unhappy with SPN right now.

Let me tell you a small story about Due South and the one OTP that no one can screw up for me.

My first love was Fraser.  I loved him from the get go.  Fraser is intelligent, handsome, odd, polite, kind, fearless, athletic, strong, broken...I could go on forever.  He's genuinely good and 99% of the time, he does what is right, even if it doesn't make sense or it will hurt him.  In Chicago, he's like an alien.  But if you understand where he came from and how he grew up, you understand him and you realize that he has a subtle sense of humor and can be passive aggressive and is a flawed but courageous character.  Fraser, who thought he was in love and she betrayed him in the worst possible way.  They even did things perfectly with Fraser.  Most shows introduce past romances in the same episode that same romance is brought into light again (SPN is guilty of this.  We never heard of Cassie until 1.13, and that's ALL we hear of her.)  But in Due South, we first hear of Victoria (not by name, but by her story) nine episodes before she even shows up.  For two seasons you get to know Fraser.

You would think that switching out another lead character on the show, Fraser's best friend, would change things for the worst.

You would be wrong.

Because here comes Ray Kowalski, hugging Fraser the moment he sees him, but that's an act.  Ray Kowalski is good at acting, because he's covering while Vecchio goes undercover.  The first episode with him in it explodes (literally, they are in a flaming car) and even though Ray Kowalski is prickly and Fraser is dead certain that this imposter is NOT the real Ray Vecchio, Ray Kowalski still says it's been a pleasure working with you and Fraser looks at him and says, dead serious, 'likewise'.  Then you slowly get to know Ray Kowalski.  He is still in love with his ex wife; he dances wonderfully; he boxes; he feels guilt over things, things that Vecchio would not have (for those who have seen the show, Beth Botrelle.  Ray V would not have felt like he was pulling the trigger at all); he never gets embarrassed when Fraser does odd things like lick things off the ground, only scrunches his nose; he punches Fraser and feels so strongly to make things right that he asks Fraser to punch him back; and when Fraser was kidnapped and a gun went off, Ray Kowalski drove a police motorycyle through a high window to save him.

Hard not to love a guy like that.  Especially one that nearly dies in the Canadian wilderness and then turns around and goes with Fraser on an adventure in this same deadly wilderness.  That's love, ladies and gentlemen.

It's like the show is a zany kind of love story, but better.  I identified with Ray Kowalski.  Still crazy about his ex wife, but knowing it was over.  Ray Kowalski hated his life, had loads of issues, took the undercover gig in the first place because he needed a change.  Then BAM, there's Fraser, the weirdest guy on the planet.  And Fraser, well, we've followed him for two whole seasons.  We KNOW how love has screwed him over.  We know how alienated he feels, even around his best friend Ray Vecchio.  Fraser is lonely.  But so is Ray Kowalski.  Kowalski is just as alienated as Fraser.  He's grown up being made fun, being ashamed of himself, having his father disagree with his choice of career.  Fraser only loved one woman.  Ray only loved one woman.  So different and yet, in their hearts, scarily the same.

So I guess for my future, I'm going to need a quirky Canadian who licks things he shouldn't.  Or at least I really want one.  :)
