Story: Standing the Test of Time
Rating: G
Word Count: 519
Notes: This drabble gives a small glimpse of Jelena’s honeymoon, so probably nothing major, I hope.

Jelena and her husband took deep breaths as they walked out of the hotel in the kimonos they bought yesterday. Hoping to blend in with the locals, they slowly said a few phrases of the local language to any locals they passed by. Additionally, they also tried to learn the customs of Takemizu Village in order to give a good impression of the people.

“What should we do next, honey?” asked Jelena.

“Let’s see,” her husband stroked his chin, “We’ve already tried the food, bought some souvenirs, learned how to bow, and got the local massage. I can’t wait to do more stuff.”

“Right,” she said slowly. “I guess we just have to keep looking around.”

“You don’t sound excited to me.”

“I just want to use this time to just relax and take a break from my duties back home.”

“I see. Well, let’s look around, shall we?”

They strolled around the village until Jelena saw people kneeling around a small table in a pavilion. The people were slowly sipping the tea from their cups as they talked to one another. Seeing the calm and carefree way they were behaving, she saw an opportunity to relax and enjoy the warmth and taste of the tea, which she hadn’t tasted for so long since childhood. Now all she had to do was to tell her husband.

Her husband noticed her stopping on her tracks and walked towards her.

“What is it, honey?” he asked.

“Look over there,” she pointed at the direction of the tea set. “Let’s try some of that tea over there.”

He looked at the people drinking tea slowly as steam rose from their cups. That must be what she was talking about, and by the looks of it, trying some of that shouldn’t hurt.

“Let’s go,” he said. “I can’t wait to try that stuff; I’ve been shivering ever since I got here.”

They walked towards the pavilion and sat together near two available seats. Jelena slowly poured tea on her cup and her husband’s as steam rose from their cups.

“Be careful, honey. It’s very hot,” she warned. Hearing her warning, her husband slowly grabbed his cup with one hand carrying the side and the other carrying the bottom. She followed suit with hers.

“Ready, set, drink,” said her husband as they smiled together with their cups on their hands. They took a few sips from their tea every now and then to see who can finish theirs first. At the same time, they had to be careful not to scald their tongues or spill the tea on their kimonos. Never mind if there were any onlookers eyeing them with amusement; all that mattered was the warmth of the tea and finishing their own first before the other one could.

“That was more fun than I thought,” Jelena let out a small breath and put her empty cup down. When her husband did the same thing, he laughed softly.

“Sounds like we should get one of these back home in case it gets cold,” he said as they stood up.

“Good idea,” she replied.
