I've just learned of a thing called a drabble. It is a short work of fiction of a hundred words and is intended to test the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.
Apparently there are drabble contests in which contestants are given a theme and an amount of time in which to compose a compelling drabble. A subset of drabble is 55fiction which is a drabble with a very rigid set of rules. First and foremost, the drabble should only be 55 words long exactly. It needs a settings with one or more characters, a conflict, and a resolution.
I'm going to try to write a drabble a day. I need to find a good writing prompt generator first. To work the rust out of my pen, I think that I'm going to start writing drabbles about my most notable roleplaying characters.
-Ummon Cloudspark, half-elf sorcerer, bar owner in a sea side town, free spirited prankster, possibly fathered by the wind, doesn't stay dead
-Haket Davor, half-orc barbarian, pet dire wolf, interested in ancient Dwarven ruins, owns a magic Dwarven tankard that 'remembers' brews
-Glam Morad, dwarven cleric, brewmaster, likes to keep his feet on the ground, has killed more enemies with his spiked armor than his dwarven warhammer
-Nullen, aleerian mechanic, former bounce armor marine, awarded a purple heart and lost his leg, developing a bounce armor for disabled soldiers, tinkers away his free time
-FR-N2, escaped AI, hacker, pretends to be robot when it suits him, may know something that he shouldn't, excels at macgyvering himself out of situations
-Stiffy McGee, drow spellcaster, possibly a demon, ancient, evil but friendly, has created several evil magical items, tasks mortals with retrieving them for his own amusement
-Lt. Red, mutant human, left his village to become a man and never returned, ladies man, expert vehicle mechanic, created the Hummer of Death, supposedly died
-Blue the Eagle, mutant eagle, soldier for hire, cocoons herself to develop new mutations, strong, fast, scary, tinkers with electronics, only ever loved one man
I might try the site below first when I get home tonight. I've got a good feeling about this.
