#6: Doomsday

So after seeing Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers and the even better The Descent, I guess I had my expectations up too high. I mean, Dog Soldiers remains one of my favorite werewolf movies still, and The Descent was one of my favorite movies of the year (if not THE favorite). So when I found out about Doomsday, I got pretty excited. I mean, the movie looked like it was a combination of 28 Days Later, The Road Warrior, and Escape From New York! How could it not be brilliant? Well... as it turns out, it's not. It's fun, sure! I enjoyed the movie. But the parts that were the MOST fun, I'd already seen done better in the three aforementioned movies. Niel Marshall's better than that; this movie felt a little bit TOO much like it was a fan-film as a result. That one of the characters was named Miller and one Carpenter (after the directors of Road Warrior and Escape from New York) made it obvious to me that Neil Marshall intended for the movie to be an homage to these other movies. And after giving us a great werewolf movie and an even greater brand new horror movie, he's certainly earned the right to do so. I just hope the next movie he does gets back to doing awesome new stuff rather than just reminding me of other directors' awesome stuff.
