Note: After certain people forced me to make a verse based on a weird dream of mine, I finally couldn't resist any longer. But seriously, this is as AU as it can get.

Jensen had been friends with Jared for three years now and everything had been great so far. Jared wasn't like the other kids; he didn't run around picking his nose or shoving down his pants to show everyone his naked butt. No, Jared was funny and nice and could make Jensen laugh at everything and nothing. Usually Jensen wasn't all too good with other children. He had decided to ignore them, noticing that they were just acting too stupid for him and now they all thought that he was kind of strange.

Thing is, Jensen thought that all the other children were kind of strange.

Except Jared, of course. Jared wasn't strange at all, maybe a bit crazy, but not strange. Only bad thing was that he was still hanging out with Brian. Jensen didn't like Brian all that much, but he could live with him; Brian just seemed to plainly hate Jensen and he just couldn't understand that. Sometimes he was even was a bit angry with Jared for being friends with someone who obviously hated Jensen, but then again, Jared always defended Jensen, so there wasn't much he could do about it.

He liked it more when he was alone with Jared, but Jared had made a lot of friends since they were in junior high and Jensen was happy for him, he really was. Jensen still kept to himself and he liked it that way.

His mom had always told him that the only person he'll ever really need was himself. Jensen kind of agreed, even though he didn't understand the full meaning of that statement.

Jared was excited. Like, really really excited. His birthday was in two days and not only would he turn twelve, but he would also be all big and grown up then. Twelve was as good as adulthood in Jared's opinion and he just couldn't wait for it. Besides, being twelve also meant not being too tall for his age for once. At least Jared hoped so.

His parents seemed to be happy for him too; Dean had just once said that, with Jared turning twelve, the shit would hit the fan and the teenage angst would begin. Jared didn't know what he meant with that and Sam had swatted Dean upside the head, so he must've thought that Dean had been stupid too. Otherwise they smiled along with him, even suggested a birthday party and Jared wasn't about to say no to that.

He would invite Jensen, Brian and Chad, a guy he had met in junior high and who was a bit too crazy for his taste, but funny nevertheless. He had decided to also invite Miranda, because he had kind of forgiven her for picking Brian over him and she'd been really nice to him the past few months. There was just one little problem.

There was this girl, Sandy, that Jared really wanted to come to his party, but he was too afraid to invite her. She sat beside him in his history class, mainly because neither Jensen nor Brian were in the same class, and Jared had almost immediately fallen in love with her. She was pretty, with soft brown hair and the prettiest smile Jared had ever seen. She had also given Jared a new sheet of paper when he had needed one and if that wasn't love, then Jared didn't know what love was.

So, when she liked him enough to share her school stationary with him, she surely must like him enough to come to his party if he asked her.

Jared just hoped he didn't make too big a fool of himself.

Jensen had just walked up to his locker by the time Jared had caught up to him, grabbed him by the arm and stopped him from moving any further. Jared had the biggest smile on his face and Jensen couldn't help but smile back.

“Jen, you won't believe what just happened!” Jared blurted out excitedly, looking around them to check that no one was eavesdropping on them and then turned back to Jensen, who was looking at him questioningly. Jared didn't even wait for an answer. “Sandy McCoy just agreed to come to my birthday party, isn't that, like, the most awesome thing ever?”

Jensen kind of had a problem to keep the smile on his face, but Jared didn't notice and Jensen nodded. “Yeah, that is awesome. Did you just walk up to her and ask?”

Jared looked a bit sheepish now and Jensen could see a fine blush spreading across his cheeks. “Kind of. Mostly I just stammered and ranted, but I guess she got what I wanted to ask her.” He admitted softly and Jensen smiled. “That's cool, Jay.”

Jared grinned at him and released his arm when he heard the school bell ring. “It really is. Well, I gotta go. I'll see you in gym class.” He waved goodbye and hurried down the hallway. Jensen looked after him and sighed quietly. To be honest, he didn't like Sandy all that much. Sure, she was nice and pretty, but otherwise...

Jensen didn't know what he didn't like about her. He just knew that he really didn't like her at all.

Jared's birthday was a blast so far. They had eaten cake, played stupid games and even Brian had been nice so far. Though it seemed that he was now rather picking on Chad than on Jensen, which was totally okay with Jared. Chad had had enough by the time Brian had insulted his hair for the fifth time and had just taken off with Miranda; they were now both sitting at the table, eating the remains of the cake and complaining about Brian. Jared had wanted to join them, it was his cake after all, but he couldn't. Simply couldn't. Because Sandy was talking to him about stuff he didn't know anything about, and he was busy keeping an interested look on his face. He didn't mind, though. Sandy talking to him was worth the ache in his face muscles from the constant smiling.

“So... um.. would you like to get your present now?” She asked with a smile on her face after a somewhat awkward silence and Jared was more than happy to agree, because he hadn't gotten any of his presents from his friends yet. He liked the surprise and didn't want to ruin it right at the beginning of his party. That didn't mean he liked waiting for his presents.

“Sure, that'd be cool.” He said nonchalantly. Dean had told him to act all cool and disinterested when he was around a girl he liked and Jared had the feeling that he should rather listen to Dean than to Sam when it came to girls. Sandy just nodded happily and grabbed her bag, rummaging through it to retrieve a slightly bigger, nicely wrapped, present. She handed it over to him with a shy smile and Jared took it with slightly trembling fingers. He carefully unwrapped it.

Five bags of M&M's, each '30 percent more content'. Enough to last a month and that was just plain wonderful. He looked at her with a big grin on his face. “That is awesome, seriously. Thank you so much!” He exclaimed happily and could see Sandy slightly blushing as she nodded, obviously pleased.

Jared had the feeling that this was the moment. The moment he should kiss her, because she was fidgeting and smiling shyly at him and blushing. His first ever kiss and it was right in front of him and he just needed to lean over and slightly down and do it. Jared couldn't explain what kept him from doing it, but it just... it didn't feel right to do it and Jared always listened to his gut feeling. So instead he smiled at her and nodded over to the table Miranda and Chad were sitting at. “Want to go over there and grab some cake?”

“Yeah, sure.” She agreed immediately.

And when Sandy looked slightly disappointed and upset, Jared pretended to not notice it.

“Hey, Jenny. All alone by yourself again?”

Jensen closed his eyes in horror at the mocking voice. He should've known it. Brian had behaved around Jensen for the time that Jared had been around, but now that Jared had walked off with Sandy, Brian didn't need to pretend anymore. Jensen wasn't all too happy about Jared disappearing with Sandy, even though he didn't know why, and the last thing he needed was Brian making fun of him now. “Just leave me alone, Brian.” He mumbled softly and turned away from him, intently staring out of the window.

“Ah, come on. Don't be so uptight. Don't you ever have fun?” Brian asked with a smile on his face that you could only describe as mean as he came to stand in front of Jensen, blocking his view. “But I think I wouldn't have too much fun, either, if I didn't have any friends at all.”

Jensen sighed and just tried to look the other way. He already knew the verbal blows Brian directed his way at a daily basis, it wasn't anything new and he wasn't going to let it get to him this time. The one instinct, where Brian had Jensen running off and crying when they were still in primary school, felt ages ago and Jensen really didn't want to relive that. “Just go away.”

“Jenny, don't be this way. Maybe you should do it like your mother; find yourself a new friend every week, let yourself get used and beat up by him and then go and find another one. Seems to work for her, I'm sure you'd have some fun like that too.” Brian mocked and it was just about enough. Brian hadn't insulted Jensen's mother in years and he couldn't take it. Not that, not when it was about his family. He was seriously afraid he would start crying in front of Brian again, his eyes wet and his vision kind of blurry, when suddenly Brian was stumbling forward with a the force of a push at his shoulder.

“Stop molesting other kids and go make yourself useful.” Sam said gruffly, shoving Brian towards the mess that was the dining table. “That table doesn't clean itself.” The party wasn't nearly over and Brian was just another guest, who wasn't supposed to clean up anything. He was about to say as much but closed his mouth immediately when he saw the look on Sam's face. Sam pointed towards the table again. “Clean this up. Now.” He said this in a tone that didn't allow any arguing and Jensen understood for the first time why Jared never dared arguing with his parents. Sam giving orders really was somewhat intimidating.

Brian quickly hurried off to do as he was told and when Sam turned to Jensen, his eyes were soft and friendly and Jensen thankfully didn't feel like crying anymore. “That kid obviously has some problems, just don't listen to him.” He said with a reassuring smile and Jensen felt himself nod a bit tiredly. “I know I shouldn't listen to him, but he just wouldn't stop insulting me or my family. I don't know what I did to make him so angry.” Jensen said quietly and Sam sighed.

“People act a bit weird sometimes when they think that someone's a threat.” He offered a bit helpless and Jensen frowned. “Why should I be a threat to him?” He asked skeptically and Sam shrugged. “You'll understand that in a few years. So, are you staying over night?” He quickly changed the topic and Jensen decided that it was better to let it be. Underneath all the arguing and anger, Brian really wasn't worth being upset over. Jensen nodded again. “Yeah, my mom said it's okay that I sleep over again.”

Sam smiled. “That's nice. Then you don't have to worry over Brian bullying you the whole evening.”

Jensen found that he was more than happy to agree.

They were sitting on the floor of Jared's room, eating the first bag of the M&M's Sandy had given Jared. The party had been over for two hours now and they were ready to go bed, they'd changed into their pajamas and brushed their teeth. But they could both never resist candy and Dean and Sam weren't around to get angry over them eating after having brushed their teeth.

“So, did you have fun today?” Jared asked through a mouthful of the delicious candy and looked at Jensen expectantly. Jensen almost always slept over when it was possible and Jared really liked that fact. He guessed it was because Jensen didn't like his mom's boyfriends, but he wasn't sure and he didn't really care as long as it made Jensen spend more time with him.

Jensen's gaze was focused on his naked feet when he answered. “Sure, it was nice.” He said quietly and seemed to think something over, before he suddenly looked up at Jared with wide eyes. “Oh man.” He breathed. “I totally forgot to give you your present.” Jared was kind of surprised by that, because he didn't even notice. He'd made sure everyone gave him his present before leaving, but he just kind of forgot it with Jensen. Then again, he had invited the others mostly to get his presents and spent time with them. He had invited Jensen only for the sake of spending time with him.

“It's cool.” He said quickly. “You can give it me now if you want.” Jensen nodded in answer and padded over to his bag and when he came back to sit down next to Jared again, he held a small package in his hands. It was a bit strangely wrapped, the bow hanging kind of loosely off one edge and Jensen coughed a bit uncomfortably when he noticed Jared looking at the clumsy wrapping. “I wrapped it myself, so.. yeah. Sorry.”

Jared simply waved him off. “Nah, it looks nice.” He smiled excitedly and unwrapped it just as carefully has he had done with the other presents. When he was done, he gasped quietly, a bit shocked and in awe. “Oh... wow.” Right there in his hands lay the first issue of 'Clone Wars'. It seriously couldn't get better than that. “That's amazing! Thank you so, so much!” He grinned happily at Jensen, who scratched the back of his neck with a shy and uncertain expression on his face.

And when Jared leaned over and slightly down, it felt totally right. It was right there in front of him and his gut feeling was awesome, so when he gave Jensen a quick and soft kiss on his lips, it was the most natural thing in the world. When he leaned back Jensen was looking at him a bit stunned, caught off guard and unsure what to do, but then he was smiling the prettiest smile at Jared. It was even prettier than Sandy's smile and when they climbed into the same bed later on, sharing a blanket and Jensen's cold feet touching his, Jared was absolutely fine with the world.

He was twelve now and an adult, it had been the best birthday of his life, Jensen was the best friend you could think of and it seriously couldn't get better than this.
