Recommendations?

The Big Finish Summer Sale is on and I'm planning on treating myself to some new stuff.

I'm looking principally at the one-day "DW for a fiver" offers; I've got all the Eighth Doctor titles, so barring those, are any of the other DW titles on offer absolute "must haves"?

Any and all suggestions welcome :-)

Someone asked me this the other day - the LJ post I made is flocked, but I've copied and pasted the list (the titles in bold are the ones I've listened to repeatedly and enjoyed every time):

June 6 - Doctor Who releases 1-10
The Sirens of Time, Phantasmagoria, Whispers of Terror, The Land of the Dead, The Fearmonger, The Marian Conspiracy, The Genocide Machine, Red Dawn, The Spectre of Lanyon Moor and Winter for the Adept

June 7 - Doctor Who releases 11-20
The Apocalypse Element, The Fires of Vulcan, The Shadow of the Scourge, The Holy Terror, The Mutant Phase, Storm Warning, The Sword of Orion, The Stones of Venice, Minuet in Hell and Loups-Garoux.

June 8 - Doctor Who releases 21-30
Dust Breeding, Bloodtide, Project: Twilight, The Eye of the Scorpion, Colditz, Primeval, The One Doctor, Invaders from Mars, The Chimes of Midnight, Seasons of Fear.

June 9 - Doctor Who releases 31-40
Embrace the Darkness, The Time of the Daleks, Neverland, Spare Parts, ...Ish, The Rapture, The Sandman, The Church and the Crown, Bang-Bang-A-Boom!, ( ... )

I already have my eye on Lanyon Moor because of the Brig, and I'm sure I've seen Phantasmagoria rec'd before, so it's good to have that one backed up.

The idea of DW meets G&S in The Pirates also sounds like something I should check out :-)

Cheers!

I confess I love the combination of Sixy, Evelyn and the Brig in Lanyon Moor.

Phantasmagoria is creepily good...

I'm not a huge fan of G&S, but I still enjoyed The Pirates - if that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is!

It really depends on what you like! For my part, I'd say these are unmissable: Spare Parts (Five, Nyssa, Cybermen), Omega (Five and... surprise!... Omega), The Marian Conspiracy (Six and Evelyn - if you haven't listened to or liked Six before, I still recommend this. You see a whole new Six in Big Finish!), Jubilee (another Six and Evelyn; this is the story on which the televised episode 'Dalek' with Nine and Rose was based off of, but the original is a heck of a lot creepier), and Doctor Who and the Pirates (which features Six and Evelyn and singing). I honestly don't find any of the early Seven stuff to be must-listen, but if you're a fan of him, there's Flip-Flop (Seven and Mel, very timey-wimey), Bang-Bang-a-Boom (in which Seven and Mel find themselves in the middle of an international song contest), and Colditz (in which Seven and Ace find themselves prisoners at Colditz castle; also starring David Tennant).

Personal opinions, so your mileage may vary!

Oh, I like a bit of everything :-) I have to say that Six and Seven are the two Doctors I've seen least of, so I can come to Six, at least, without the hate that seems to surround him in some corners of fandom! I've already listened to The Holy Terror (which I thought was fab) and Medicinal Purposes - and I already like Evelyn a lot, so I think I'm definitely going to check out more stories with her in them.

I'm not sure about Seven yet, but the idea of DW meets Eurovision sounds like a hoot!

And seeing as I'd listen to DT read the phone book, I might have to give Colditz a go, too.

Thanks a lot for the recs.

If you're already sold on Six and Evelyn, definitely Pirates. The Marian Conspiracy is her introduction story, and a great start for the two of them if you want to go back to the beginning. And DW meets Eurovision is exactly as hilarious as you'd expect it to be, even if Seven and Mel aren't your favorites. (I'm pretty sure Mel isn't anyone's favorite, but I like her a lot in the audios.)

Be warned that DT is doing a German accent (and is definitely being a baddie!) in Colditz. I find the accent kind of hilarious, but it's not the accent you'd want him to read the phone book in. (Because I'm totally with you on the phone book thing. But not as his Colditz character!)

*snerk*

I admit, my childhood memories of La Langford are mostly what's keeping her towards the bottom of my TBL (to be listened-to) pile! But I can imagine that's the sort of story that would suit her.

I'm pretty sure I've read the synopsis of Colditz so I'm prepared for the German baddie, and no, the phonebook needs to be in the Scottish accent :-)

The Marian Conspiracy, The Fires of Vulcan, The Holy Terror, The One Doctor, Spare Parts, ...Ish, Jubilee, Doctor Who and the Pirates, Flip Flop, Omega and Davros.

I'd like to stress The Holy Terror which is one of the first audios I've listened to and still one of the best. The Fires of Vulcan which features the seventh Doctor and Mel in Pompeii is also very good.

Actually, I've got The Holy Terror and listened to it a week or so ago and I thought it was brilliant :-)

Thanks for the other recs.

The Marian Conspiracy - Six and Evelyn. A great historical, with a thoughtful portrayal of Mary Tudor and a wonderful introduction for Evelyn.
The Holy Terror - Six and Frobisher, and I can't think of a non-spoilery summary. It's very, very good and I love it.
The One Doctor - Six and Mel and the funniest thing ever.
Bang-Bang-A-Boom - Seven and Mel, a murder mystery wrapped up in a parody of Eurovision and Star Trek and also hilarious.
Jubilee - Six and Evelyn. Dark and painful and I mean that in the best way possible. Simply excellent ( ... )

I've liked the little of Six (in The Holy Terror and Medicinal Purposes) that I've heard so far, so I definitely want to listen to more of him.

Thanks for the pointers :)

This bunch receives my highest recommendations: The Holy Terror (Six and Frobisher), The One Doctor (Six and Mel), Spare Parts (Five and Nyssa), Bang-Bang-A-Boom! (Seven and Mel), and Doctor Who and the Pirates (Six and Evelyn). If you like humorous audios, The One Doctor and Bang-Bang-A-Boom! are my top choices.

Below them, I'd rank: The Marian Conspiracy (Six, with Evelyn's introduction), Loups-Garoux (Five and Turlough), Colditz (Seven and Ace), The Eye of the Scorpion (Five and Peri, Erimem's introduction).

Thanks. I already like Evelyn, so I definitely plan to get hold of some more of the stories which feature her and Six and the DW-meets-Eurovision one sounds too much of a hoot to pass up!
