When she can’t scream anymore, she sobs. Bizarre, trembling sounds that reverberate off the glass walls.

“We get a clearer read when she’s entirely lucid,” Her father explains. “She won’t remember any of it tomorrow.” he assures the man standing beside him. Inside, the nurses tighten the restraints and press the thick needles deeper into her flesh. She bites at her lip and twists awkwardly on the table.

“Stop!” She manages to graze the physician’s arm with radiant fingertips and sends him toppling backward. Her father leans in, addressing her soothingly over the loudspeaker.

“Elle, sweetie, we’re almost done.” The nurses exit, and she doesn’t move anymore. “One more time, sweetheart.” She shakes her head vaguely; he glances sideways and smiles. He flips switches, adjusts monitors, and a heavy static lingers. The lights around them flicker and her eyes do the same.

Noah stares into the brilliant blue light, unmoving and silent, but his fingers curl into his palms until they ache. It ends suddenly. Everything goes dark for a moment and then the generators kick in, a quiet rumbling somewhere above them. Elle’s eyes water before they fall shut.

“Amazing, isn’t she?” Bob says, handing a folder off to the doctors. Everyone moves again, stepping back into the glass room and beginning to disconnect the girl’s small frame from its restraints. Noah breathes again, thinking of someone two thousand miles away.

“Impressive, Mr. Bishop.” he says quietly, turning to the other man and smiling.
