Get blamed for stuff at job

The other week I had some fun at work where people decided to anonymously gang up on me and blame me for their own mess. It makes me wonder why, despite the steady paychecks and hours, I'm still there after 4 years now.

I was looking for an extra corrugated plastic tub because I was short. I walked around, and a coworker pointed to some extra ones on a shelf. Even though I had tried to avoid my grouchy manager, he overheard and told me to get some under my neighbor's tables (they were gone for the night). He then pointed out the piles of tubs under people's tables, and spent the entire rest of the night complaining about how people leave tubs full of trash under the tables.

The next day, the front office had sent out a memo telling us to clean up under our tables quickly or we'd be fined if the management had to clean up after us.

I came to my own table to find a pile of the memos sitting on my table, a few of them with sarcastic messages scribbled on like “Thanks a lot” or “good job”. It was obvious a bunch of people blamed ME for the front office expecting them to clean up. It's not my fault your table's a mess, that's your fault. What I can’t figure out is how the finger got pointed at me? Did the manager say “Talk to this guy” when asked about the memo? And it's not like my table's the worst offender, there were people who had piles of shit under their tables.

I became pretty agitated, went to the two parts of the warehouse and started telling people that I wasn't responsible for the memo. I got a bunch of shrugs and rolled eyes. It’s true that some people probably had no idea what I was talking about.

I can’t remember exactly what happened next or in what order. I remember getting into a verbal yelling match at another co-worker, possibly one who had left a note on my table. I remember telling everyone that I had nothing to do with the memo and they needed to leave me the fuck alone.

I think at that point I felt surrounded by uncaring, hostile enemies. At one point my manager tried to talk to me and misunderstood my concern. Eventually I was walking around saying that if anyone had a problem with me talk to my face and I’d fuck them up with a sharp object. I was pretty agitated.

My manager ended up threatening to call the cops if I didn't calm down and that did pretty much shut me up, although I continued to mutter under my breath that everyone was scum and sucked.

Since then people have cleaned up under the tables like required and no one has bugged me about it again. I don't know if it was because of my anger and hostility, or because they don't give a shit anymore, but whatever. When you have a company filled with aging baby boomers who probably had better paying jobs that were shipped overseas, they get paid shit, and their retirement is looking questionable, it means you get a lot of cranky motherfuckers under one roof.

manager, work sucks, work, jobs
