What to do with my life (LONG POST LOL TL;DR)

Dec 10, 2008 20:26

I swear I think I've bitched about this a million times and still haven't figured it out. Of course, I don't expect anyone to have the answer for me, only I can figure it out myself.

I did a test at a local job assistance place that asks you a billion questions and then matches you up to the careers that most suit you.

(apparently the person who designed the results website didn't design it to work for Firefox, only IE, because he's a fucking douche, so I'm having trouble bringing up the results.)

- Upon completing a new training program, you appear capable of picking up new concepts without direct support.
- You are generally adaptive in the intellectual sense.
- Your overall learning capacity is good; you should demonstrate an adequate understanding of the requirements of a new job.
- You have a sound understanding of everyday communication processes.
- You should be competent in making analyses involving written and verbal data.
- You do not typically have any difficulty in effectively communicating thoughts and ideas to others.
- You are proficient in the use of words and language.
- You sometimes may prefer to use a calculator or computer to handle some numerical problems.
- You rapidly grasp numerical information. You likely have little difficulty in assimilating new information of a numerical nature. You should effectively solve numerical problems and mathematical applications. You are certainly adaptive when handling complex numerical decisions.
- You prefer not to be pressured by critical deadlines. You may prefer time to think things through, to check things out.
- You are not inclined to project a high sense of urgency. You might appreciate input from others when beginning a new project.
- You express a low energy level; your work style is compatible with a more relaxed, sedentary-level of work. (I'm not about to become a housewife LOL!)
- You prefer to take action after having the time and opportunity to process information pertaining to the situation. You likely prefer to wait for specific instructions before taking action.
-You tend to be a quiet, personal producer who works hard for a leader and a cause..
- You express a generally cautious attitude regarding authority.
- You may be quick to take and maintain a defensive position. You tend to defend your point of view once your mind is made up.
- You tend to prefer to be autonomous and independent in the typical work situation.
- You may express guarded optimism and trust. When under stress, your attitude toward some people can be more tense than open.
- Your assessment of others may occasionally be more critical than optimistic.
- You can potentially become impatient or faultfinding with others who do not conform to your expectations.
- You prefer to make conservative, carefully considered decisions when confronted with a problem. You may prefer to think-out and analyze decisions, to hesitate making decisive solutions. You may take longer to make decisions, which arise from day to day.
- You are generally pleasant, friendly and patient. You are not inclined to show temper or frustration.
- You tend to be modest, not inclined to take or to maintain an extreme opinion or position.
- You tend to have a cooperative outlook and are generally prepared to help others.
- You have a moderate need for freedom from controls, close supervision and organization constraints.
- You could appreciate some opportunity to challenge tradition and the status quo, in order to cause a change in something.

OCCUPATIONAL INTERESTS
You scored highest in the Technical and the Mechanical themes on the inventory. This is a typical pattern we find with engineers, data processing professionals and people who are oriented toward technical work. Essentially, this is a profile of an analytical person, one who enjoys anything that has to do with numbers, establishment of procedures and routines, research and relatively scientific work.

The creepy thing is how close most of those match me.

What has been bugging me is what I want to do with my life. Yea, I'm 27, still haven't figured that out, having a early-midlife crisis.

First off, let's look at what interests me and what I'm good at.

- I seem to have a skill at fixing things and working with tools. This includes fixing cars, do it yourself home improvement, assembling furniture, and other things of that nature. This manifested itself in my childhood when I would disassemble things like radios and then put them back together. So I could be good in a field like automotive, residential contractor, certain skilled trade, and even engineering.

- I enjoy learning. I spent my childhood reading lots of science books and magazines and I have this interest in finding out more about the world and science. This would, of course, lead me to a science job.

- I enjoy working with technical things, like computers and games and electronic gadgets. This would lead me to a computer-type position, or electronics, or game design, ect.

- There also seems to be a driving force to complete something well. Any time I finish something well, whether it's a computer program or car repair or whatnot, I have a great sense of pride and an almost childish "Lookie what I did!" feeling, a "damn I'm smart!" feeling.

Up until lately I would have been happy with a computer career, or a science career (which science I'm not sure), or engineering, or maybe even automotive. But lately, considering what my life has been like, and considering it seems the world is going to hell, I have had a strong desire to do something to make the world better and leave a strong impact on the world. This is due to my belief that man's purpose in life is to make the world better and to keep the world a good place.

My strongest desires are in fixing the Justice/court/correction system, gay/lesbian rights, human rights, stopping fundamentalism (or at least preventing them from getting their way), fixing Christianity so they're not so stupid, animal rights, environment, fixing the US and US government, fixing the poverty/war/tyranny of third world countries, ending corruption (especially in government), ending the problems with money and the gap between the rich and the middle class/poor, and basically making the world better.

But most of the jobs I'm good at aren't exactly going to deal with any of those things.

I mean, sure, I could be a desk jockey and program levels for GTA 5, but that's not going to keep people from dying for stupid reasons.

I don't know. Maybe I'll find my place in life one of these days. Or maybe I'll just be like most people and die without making a major impact.

You know, I have yet to read all the job titles it recommended, but I'll list some of the more interesting ones here:

Industrial Engineering Technician
Chemical Engineer
Network Specialist
Systems Administrator
Technical Writer
Creative Writer
Graphics Designer
Software Engineer
Controller??? (Is this like world ruler? :)
Industrial Engineer
Database Developer
Camera & Photographic Equipment Repairers (this was listed near the top...wtf???)
Avionics Technician
Computer Programmer
Railroad Engineer
Electronics Technician
Computer Operator ????
Electrician
Photographer
PC Specialist

I did another test that also had things like biologist, computer technician, and physicist. Most of the jobs were ones I'd consider doing anyway, so there's few surprises in the lists. Although I got weird results like Forestry and Horticulturist, public leader, and Teacher, as well as nurse and various medical practices. Weird.

Sorry this shit's so long. TL;DR indeed.
