Well, I just found out some somewhat bad news. A fur friend of mine who is in the army reserve is going to be shipped off somewhere. I'm not sure where exactly. We're going to have a "Don't get killed" goodbye party for him.
You know, it's funny. I've been watching this war, and I'm not really that upset about it yet. I guess being thousands of miles away affects that, and makes me feel a tad insensitive. It is a bit exciting though to watch the fleets of tanks and humvees go charging across the desert at 50mph, and I think it might be neat to go charging with them. I do wonder what the reporters are thinking when they travel with these battalions. Although, with 50+ marines guarding me, I guess I'd feel pretty safe too. Unless I got hit by a Scud.
The one thing that does piss me off though, is the fact that a lot of newspapers around here are going off about the war like it's just a skirmish. Titles like "Operation Iraq Freedom" and "Strike on Iraq" on newschannels like CNN just don't describe very well what's going on over there. I think the Detroit Free Press summarized it well on their front page, in letters that filled half the page:
WAR
(bah, couldn't get it any bigger than that)
And that's exactly what this is. A war. An invasion, to be exact. We are invading and taking over another country using force, in an attempt to remvoe the current government and install our own government. It's basically the same thing that has happened for thousands of years: a larger country trying to assimilate another. Now, it could also be considered liberating a enslaved country, much like the US liberated France and the Jews during WW2. But in my opinion, liberation only occurs if the people WANT to be liberated, and I'm not so sure if the Iraq people really want to be liberated.
Another thing that I've noticed is that news channels like CNN are ONLY talking about the war, and not talking at all about anything that might make people be against the war. For instance, there are still anti-war protests going on around the world, yet there's nothing about them on CNN. Luckily, the Free Press once again informed me of these protests. Some of the middle eastern protesters are chanting "Death to Iraq" and declaring Jihad. Let's hope to god these protests don't get too out of hand.
Well, the only thing I can hope is that the war is swift, no civillians get killed, and Iraq surrenders instead of fighting. Oh, and let's hope that Saddam does something real stupid that makes the entire world hate him, like execute innocent people or something, that way everyone will support the war.
Although, when you think about it, hasn't he already done something stupid? He has been setting his own oil fields ablaze...
