Well, as if losing 102-10 wasn't bad enough (yup, it was that bad), the team we played put a highlight video of the game on YouTube. It was pretty much the "Shane Batty Show", he ended up kicking nine goals ( Read more... )

That was pretty cool to watch. The Carlton supporter in me cringes at the fact that the team that thumped you were wearing Collingwood guernseys.

Bloody hell at #32 for the opposition. Is he really ridiculously tall, or was that a forced perspective kinda thing?

I'm sure he is. It's pretty hard to beat a team that is 75% Australian, especially when a few have played reserve grade ball.

Oh, and they have Chris Heffernan, too, from Essendon. Remember him?

Yesss, I definitely do remember him. See, my dad is a one-eyed Essendon supporter, so for the first decade of my childhood I was pumped full of everything Essendon.

That is decidedly awesome.

And chyeah, that 75% Aussie thing explains a lot. I hope your next game goes better for you.

Yeah, the team we play next is 7-0 and hasn't lost a league game since 2006.

I was about to ask what percentage of players were Aussies. And how many Aussies are in your team?

BTW, you are more than entitled to clap like a monkey after a team goal! It's not easy to kick a goal in between those bloody sticks. (BTW, I giggled when I saw the goal posts - they're quite shorter than what I'm used to)

Those are our Metro goalposts. Apparently we had bigger ones that disappeared. Odd.

Offhand, I think we have about 15 Aussies and about 20 Americans. We also have 2 Irishman and my co-worker, who is from Guyana. The Australians are from all over the place -- one from Perth, one from Adelaide, one from Canberra, one from Sydney, one from Woodonga (across the Murray from Albury), and the rest from Melbourne. We usually get around 20-25 for a game total, but teams like New York and Baltimore-Washington (who we play our next two 18-a-side games against) have between 70 and 100 members, so they've got a pretty deep pool to choose from.

Hahaha. They're not exactly the most discreet thing to steal :)

I guess, for a migrant Aussie there's nothing like playing Aussie Rules to make you less homesick. Afterall, we sleep, breathe, eat it - not to mention anyone who's anyone plays footy in Primary/High School/College!

Great to hear the game is alive and well in the US of A!
