Had a lovely evening with
aivilo_18 last night. I finally broke my longstanding streak of never winning a theatre lotto when they called my name for Billy Elliot. It was my second time seeing it (first time was on Broadway a couple of years ago) and I enjoyed the dancing and performances very much. But I have to say that like the first time, I found the music largely forgettable. "Solidarity" is the only song I can remember. For Elton John, it's very surprising, since I love so much of his music. So, unlike other musicals I can (and have) seen multiple times, this one isn't in that upper bracket of my favourites. As much as I enjoy the dancing, for a musical I really need to love the songs. Still, a very enjoyable show, and I love the story.
Watching mine workers and cops tap dance made me muse about the musicals they'll make in 30 years about current world events. I wonder how long until a 9/11 musical? I hope never, unless you count the one they did on Skins S2.
