I'm currently cooking
elk ribs (which are delicious if you've never tried them) and my brown sugar had gone rock hard. I have the little clay disc thingy that's supposed to keep it soft, but it's clearly not very effective.
I guess before the internet, I would have called my mom to ask her what to do, but instead I just hopped on Google and found out in a few seconds that I just needed to open the bag, put it in the microwave next to a cup of water, and cook for 2-3 minutes. Voila! Soft brown sugar again. Thank you, internets. Thank you.
