I have Scottish shortbread in the oven and I'm about to watch one of those NPH Christmas movies that were on Lifetime or something when NPH still had to do Lifetime Christmas movies. First up is one co-starring Rebecca Gayheart. Good times!
But first, I was listening to "Good King Wenceslas," one of my favourite carols, while I was baking. It's a song I think is very underappreciated; it's definitely not recorded very often compared to some of the other classics. I love the story about the kindly king who feeds the poor and isn't above being a human shield for his young page in a blizzard. I have fond memories of singing it in school choir as a kid, and my mom sang it when she was a girl in England.
I have a few different versions of "Good King Wenceslas," two by Canadians:
Loreena McKennitt(Her version is oddly missing the "Bring me flesh and bring me wine" verse, but is still absolutely lovely.)
Crash Test Dummies The Choir of Westminster Cathedral All right, I'm off to have my heart filled with cheer. And to try not to eat too much shortbread.
