In a moment of weakness, Sulley had taken a backpack full of food and water and had gone looking for a place to hide when the news of the plague first hit. It was a knee-jerk reaction (a completely spineless knee-jerk reaction) and he had come to his senses about six and a half minutes after finding a hidden passage in the basement of the dorms beyond the pool area. He'd tried to turn back once he realized he should be helping the people he'd started to consider friends, not hiding away. Fandom had other ideas.
That was why he was only emerging from the passage now, shoulders sagging in relief as he saw the exit. Relief was pushed aside by worry of what he would find upstairs or, more accurately, what he wouldn't find. He crept up the stairs slowly, listening for any sign of life. When he heard the murmurs of late night in the dorms, voices, footsteps and a TV somewhere, relief came rushing back.
Right now, he needed something to eat and drink and a night in his own bed. Tomorrow would come soon enough and then Sulley would no doubt find out the extent of the damage.
