http://ca.news.yahoo.com/photo/28092007/3/photo/canada-dion-rejects-calls-removal-party-s-director-image.html This is perhaps the biggest over reaction I have seen in Canadian politics in a very long time. And this over reaction comes at a very dangerous time because while there is an election the Ontario Liberals cannot afford to make a mis-step even if it comes from it's federal counterpart.
The linked article says, "According to some witnesses, Carroll is said to have responded: 'Do we also have to hire people from the Chinese community to represent the Chinese community?'" The comment was not a slight against any ethic community and the reaction by some has taken political correctness to the enth degree and in my opinion too far.
I am in agreement with Carroll\'s original statement, does it take a Californian to represent Californians? No, Governor Schwartznegger while a long time resident of the state is Austrian and he represents Californians very well.
i know there is a national movement within some levels of government to hire Quebecers to ensure Canada's commitment to national bilingualism. I am in full agreement we need to ensure Canada remains committed to bilingualism. But I do not agree that those bilingual bodies need to come from Quebec. Truthfully most of them will because they would be most qualified for the job, but not necessarily.
In my opinion this whole incident is very ugly, not because of the original comment but because of the reaction by some. This reaction is nothing more than Quebec Nationalism trying to create another schism. And I don\'t care which nation nationalsim comes from it's ugly when it rears its head. We don\'t like it when the US does it, we don't like it when Britain does it, so why should we be expected to swallow and say nothing when Quebec does it?
So let the Liberal party go ahead and over react and further hamper Dalton McGuinty's chances of forming government in Ontario. NOT!
