I remember clearly first learning about alternate dimensions while at Academy. The subject fascinated me-- the very idea of other worlds, of other places just a bit like ours and ones wildly different.
Now, after a personal visit to a less-than-Disneyland plane called Pylea, and facing a chaotic portal into damn near all of them, I'm not as... enthused as I was.
The heavy, old book-- and do I own any book but the heavy, old ones?-- made a resounding thump when I tossed it onto the desk to join its many bretheren. The spell I'd collaborated on with Giles, despite the eighteen hours of research, had been a spectacular nothing.
I glanced up to see Harmony, dutifully sitting at the reception desk, not so dutifully filing her nails or somesuch. I wasn't the first one to balk at hiring on a vampire receptionist, nor am I entirely convinced that she's secretly plotting our horrible demise. She makes an excellent cup of tea, and that has to count for something.
I looked around the office and began tidying up the books and scrolls. I'd really like to say its not amusing seeing some of our champions rather at a loss when it comes to the portal. People like Buffy, Angel... even Faith... don't often do well without something to pummel. Leaves tasks like attacking the cause and not the symptom to "book men" like myself.
Not that I don't enjoy the rough-and-tumble, though.
