Sydney, Australia. In the dead of night, three men silently bundle linguist and ancient language specialist Dr. Carl Sturgess into a waiting car, leaving his traumatized wife unconscious on the kitchen floor.
Kyoto, Japan. As the first rays of the sun light the city, a car bearing computer specialist Kim Wook heads toward a private airstrip. Wook is accompanied by two strangers.
Casper, Wyoming. Dr.'s Felix and Meryl Anderson, archaeologists of note, disappear from their log cabin.
London, England. Susan Winshore, daughter of Lord Winshore, and Egyptologist with the British Museum, boards her private chopper to fly to the family estate in Surrey. The helicopter never makes it.
Several other scientists, engineers, archaeologists, and others disappear from their homes and places of work within an hour in what appears to be a concentrated attack on the scientific community. Law enforcement officials around the globe are stunned.

The middle of the North Atlantic Ridge is cold by any standards, but at this time of year, it can be positively freezing. The twin hulled luxury yacht "Gemini" lay moored in the shelter of a small bay, on one of the many small and isolated islands that are dotted along the ridge. To the north east, lay the Azores; the east, Africa; to the west, the Continental United States; and to the south, open ocean as far as Antarctica.
About as isolated a place as any on Earth.
In the shielded operations centre aboard "Gemini", Harvey Dent surveyed the readouts on the myriad computer screens that surrounded the walls. Every operation had thus far gone to plan. Computer technicians and supervisors sat monitoring progress, and as each hit was made, the giant world map screen dominating the room showed the location with a bright red light.
His ear piece vibrated slightly, letting him know a message was coming in.
"Sir, Operations here, the first chopper is arriving. It will land in two minutes. We are ready to relocate at any time."
Dent nodded, more for his own benefit than the speaker. "I shall meet the chopper personally. Have all other arrivals directed to the Island. Keep all personnel on full alert. Be ready for anything."
"Roger. operations Out."
Dent stepped into the elevator and it automatically began to rise to the upper deck.
At last...
Renee Montoya was home.
