Guess what you guys? As of today, it is officially 13 days before Halloween. Last year, I attempted to do countdown posts and then kind of failed miserably due to the fact that I had like 8 million assignments due all at once. This year, this is not the case, so without further ado...
On the 13th day til Halloween my dear ghoul gave to me...
I'm really excited for this year's Halloween, mostly because it's on a Saturday which means I can my Halloween revels over 3 full days (I've already requested off and everything). Three full days of the three C' - costumes, candy corn, Charlie Brown (It's not Halloween until you watch It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown). It's a shame that Halloweekend only happens once every 7 years, but could that change? Seasonal Halloween retailer, Spirit, has started a petition and has even marched on Washington to rally support to change Halloween from the 31st to the last Saturday of October. Some see this as merely an attempt for Spirit to increase their profits and have started a counter-petition called Keep It 31.
I must admit I am a bit torn. The idea of a Halloweekend EVERY YEAR excites me to no end, but on the other hand, for a Pagan like myself, Halloween is more than just a day to dress up and gorge oneself on candy filled with red dye #3. It's the end and beginning of another revolution of the Wheel of the Year. It's a time for celebration of another successful year and a time for reflection and preparation for the approaching winter and next year. It is a holiday heavily steeped in tradition and the date includes that. For me, changing the date of Halloween would be like changing the date of Christmas for Christians.
So where do you stand? Are you in favor of
Halloweekend or do you want to
Keep It 31?
In either case, I find myself reminded of
this video from The Onion.
