Hot Topic or What's Up All the Kid Show Shirts?
So I was informed that the Hot Topic in Owings Mills is hiring. Initially, I was like "Yay! I can wear whatever the heck I want, finally get my snakebites and accomplish my "dye my hair every color of the electromagnetic spectrum " goal in no time, awesome!" but, then after a moment I remembered that the HT of today is not like the HT of 4 years ago. I popped by the site (it is important to research potential employers, children) and I almost cried.
IT'S SO FREAKING SCENE NOW! Everything in the store looks like what Juno's baby would design if she were raised by Jefferey Starr and I don't know, someone else popular with them scene kids. I don't mean to sound like I'm hating on scene kids, I mean one of my bestest friends, Heather, scene now and out of all the styles and groups she's tried over the years from punk to lolita, scene suits her the best...they've just always rubbed me the wrong way since the beginning. They just seems so vapid and shallow and I just can't get down with that. That and their clothes are too freaking bright and it's an affront to my eyes. It's almost bad as those ghetto nu-rave people (or whatever it's called. Their websites burn my eyes. It's like COLOR YAYYYYYY!!!!!1111 and it's very painful because they have a tendency to be flashing). Also, what the freak is up with the kid tees for big kids? I can understand nostalgia tees. I've got a Labyrinth tee and they have a Power Rangers one that I kind of want as I've been wanting one for a while. I can understand things like Kuromi, Hello Kitty, Invader Zim and Disney stuff and MAYBE and this is a big maybe, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as their target audience is somewhat broad. But Miffy? Yo Gabba Gabba? And they aren't like they have some sort witty saying on them or something. I don't get it. Yo Gabba Gabba is a preschool kids show. You might as well wear a Dora the Explorer shirt. As a Lolita I can understand being drawn to the cute, but this smacks too much of the infantilism that Lolita is so often accused of and it bothers me.
Also, Yo Gabba Gabba is weird. "There's a Party in My Tummy" and My Name is Daniel and I love to DANNCEE! are funny the first couple of times but, after that it just becomes annoying. Especially Daniel. Its a kid spazzing out. If you think that's special, go to YouTube and watch some people attempting to WuTang to Baltimore club music. You will be entertained for months.
In short, I may have hated Hot Topic back when it was Spooky Mart, but I kind of liked being able to go in there and get a pair of boots, pick up a copy of Dark Realms (I really need to get a subscription to this), Drop Dead Magaine or Gothic Beauty, gets a shirt on clearance that liked or at least run into a friend there. Now....I really don't know what to say. Goodbye HT. You were the store I loved to hate. I may visit for your Skeletanimals stuff you have and the slew of music I actually listen to that you have on clearance for $10 but, seriously, you suck now.
