It began when Robin brought the Crusader back to the outlaws' camp. The young man had been burning local churches and fouling wells; scrawny and haggard, a fierce light yet burned in his dark eyes. Eastern symbols, which not even Djaq could decipher, were tattooed across his chest and arms. Robin had rescued the man from drowning by angry villagers, yet to Little John he seemed beyond salvation, his mind clearly twisted by the horrors of war in a distant Holy Land.
Robin seemed to think him worth looking after, however. He ordered Much to tend to the Crusader, who stood eerily silent throughout the gang's scrutiny, as though whatever inner fire drove him to violence had simply snuffed itself out.
John was not the least bit comforted.

Some hours later, Will discovered a wagon mired in an area of the forest that had recently been flooded. As they rooted through the wagon's contents, John spotted a bizarre mask, needle-sharp darts sticking out of the head and around the eyeholes. Robin proceeded to put the mask on and screech like a banshee, which was not so amusing as disturbing; John did not shout witchcraft, as Allan did, but he thought the mask must be some foreign torture device. It seemed wrong to mock it so.
A chill wind kicked up as Rob removed the mask, as though to prove suspicions of black magic. Little John had never believed in such things, but the other outlaws were left somewhat shaken, nonetheless.

Still arguing over the mask's purpose, Robin, John, Will and Allan returned to camp, where Much and Djaq waited with the still-silent Crusader -- who Much had apparently dubbed Harold. But as Djaq took the mask from Robin, remarking that such a grotesque thing could not possibly be meant for good, Harold sprang into action. Quick as thought, he had a knife to Djaq's throat, screaming "Saracen evil!" and "Torturer!"
Much started to try and talk reason into Harold, but John, crouched behind them, was not about to wager Djaq's life on this man's potential for sanity. He quietly scooped up a stone, and with deadly accuracy, hurled it at the Crusader's skull. Harold dropped unconscious to the ground.
Much was furious, though John merely shook his head. And Robin, holding up the ugly mask, said grimly, "You see? That's how it works -- fear."
ooc: I know I'm an episode behind the other RH pups here, but I wanted to start my OOMs with 1x10 because my Little John is so NOT the crazy-superstitious "OMG TEH MASK IS SATAN1!!" John you see in this ep. I've tried to rearrange the bits I don't like in a way that won't take too many liberties with other characters' actions. Hopefully I've succeeded!
