Maybe I'm just an old man, but...

Ok, so earlier, a friend of mine posted this comic strip where a man tries to get a number of increasingly ludicrous jobs and eventually has to settle for working at Wendy's ( Read more... )

Believe it or not, I'm actually 99% with you on this and agree mostly with your response. But my counter is that even if someone gets the crappy job, it should at least secure a decent living. I'm not talking being able to go to the movies and buy video games; I mean I should be able to at least afford my portion of rent, pay car insurance and gas, and buy adequate food. Working full-time at one of the better retail companies around, I couldn't do that. I could barely afford groceries and gas and make a dent in my monthly car insurance ( ... )

I don't think you got anything to apologize for--you brought some good points to the depression party! And:

What I saw in this comic wasn't 'let me get my dream job', it was the gradual erosion of one's standards until the subject accepted a job that wouldn't even provide them with their minimum fiscal needs, much less emotional or professional needs. And the fact there's a skyrocketing number of people like this right now is a serious societal problem.

I agree with this TOTALLY. I read the comic and burst into tears because it was a pretty damn accurate representation of Life In General (foghorn jobs aside) for people who just want to live and work without worry for the rent, but are constantly being rejected and pushed back...by Life In General.

Or maybe I cried because I'm hormonal this week. Either way, I still agree with you.

I understand where both of you are coming from, and yes, I do see where you guys are coming from. I guess what really set me off in the comic was the part where he says, "Dear Wendy's, you win, I give up." That's the attitude that gets to me: the idea that some people seem to have that when you accept a job like that, that you've officially given up hope and thus they don't even go for that thinking their dreams will be lost in a basket of fries somewhere. Just because you,ve got a crappy job doesn't mean that you've given up anything, you're just doing what it takes to get by. And yeah, I understand that nowadays, most places starting pay isn't even enough to give you that and that there's millins of people out there not making enough I their jobs to provide even basic subsistance, and it sucks, but that should be motivation to pick yourself up, got give up.

I have an uncle who did just this when he was unemployed. He took some crappy job at a store somewhere between jobs as a mechanical engineer because he refused to go on unemployment and wanted to be productive. In a way, I find that admirable because he didn't want to be a burden on his wife, he didn't want to be one of the people "on the dole" and he was able to keep up his share of the household budget until he found another job in his field.

However, not all people have this kind of luxury, and it was a recent ex-boyfriend who taught me that. I don't want to provide any more details to preserve his privacy, but there are some people out there for whom it would be a total financial liability to take a job that makes less than a certain amount of money after taxes. In re-calculating my own budget now that I'm unemployed, I can't look for a job that asks for less than $35K a year in order for me to keep my apartment, pay all my bills, and pay for COBRA health insurance, too. You are not going to make $35K a year working at a

Yep, pretty much. The sweet, sultry allure of the siren-like song of the Financial Aid office.

When did you go to college? Because if it was even a decade ago, the financial realities surrounding paying for college are quite different ( ... )
