CHARACTER
NAME: RUDE
CANON SOURCE: FINAL FANTASY VII ETC
TIMELINE: BEGINNING OF FFVII
CANON ABILITIES: BEING A BADASS! TAKING BULLETS FOR RENO! HAVING CRUSHES ON WOMEN HE CAN'T HAVE! HAND TO HAND FIGHTING! WIRING EXPLOSIVES! DRINKING! KILLING BABIES! COUNTING MONEY! INTIMIDATION! INTERROGATION!
PERSONALITY:
Rude is quiet, he thinks before he speaks, won’t speak unless he has something to say, and thinks actions speak louder than words anyway. Rude is down to earth and straight forward. He cherishes a somewhat stoic persona that he hasn’t ever been comfortable enough to let go of with anyone, even when extraordinarily drunk.
There is a sense of humor under the stonewall though, somewhere. Rude is often darkly facetious with those he meets, sometimes inappropriately so, but he rarely sees any point in letting others know what he's really thinking. Rude is not particularly sentimental, he doesn’t play the dating and relationships game anymore; a few girls burned him early on, he learned quickly. There are a few women he loves, he simply doesn't pursue them. His kind of occupation doesn't really afford a guy much time for a steady bird anyway. The women he likes are, without a doubt his biggest weakness, even before his longtime partner Reno. He won't lose the stoic facade over them, but he will refuse to hurt them.
That said, he’s civil company, knows how to ask questions, engage in small talk, and be polite. But that’s an interrogation skill, not a personality trait. He’s definitely… distant from people and relies only on himself. Most can’t make out much about him, since he favors impassive expressions. A diamond-hard poker face combined with his deliberating mind, make him a mean player to deal with. No one is tougher on Rude than himself. Except maybe the boss.
His sense of loyalty is nearly nonexistent and belongs solely to the man paying his wages. He isn't the type to jump ship when offered a better deal, but if he feels the conditions of his contract have been broken, then he can't be held accountable if he breaks a few of the rules himself. He's a professional and takes that pretty seriously. He has been known to take bullets for his teammates, so he can't be all bad, right?
His longtime partner in crime, Reno, is a notable influence on his personality. Reno's vicious enjoyment of what they do definitely rubs off on him and they have been known to pal around and crack jokes while beating the crap out of people. Reno's enabling also sometimes leads to brash decisions, which doesn't really bother Rude too much because he's pretty confident he can handle anything. Reno's also the only person he confides in, for anything (Reno can read him like a book anyway after all this time.) Without that obnoxious redhead around he sticks more to the Stone Cold Motherfucker act. Nobody needs to know he's got feelings or anything like that.
CANON HISTORY:
The Turks:
Rude's relevance to the FFVII world starts and ends with his job. He works for the Shinra Electric Corporation in their 'Department of Research and Development' which is really a fancy name for the Turks. They take care of anything that might annoy Mr. Shinra, from business competitors to environmentally conscious terrorists. Among other things, none of which are activities good law abiding citizens would partake in. Rude’s job has involved transportation, interrogation, extortion, kidnapping, ‘recruitment’, sabotage, torture, fraud, spying, and assassination. It's also where he met his partner/best friend/huge pain in his ass: Reno.
The corporation in question has deep ties to the government and military, while the electricity it provides is made available by sucking out the planet's lifeforce. Eco-terrorists, AVALANCHE, object and they are the Turks' most common in-game adversaries. Only young Elena seems to show any sort of conscience about the company's dirty dealings, but working with cold Tseng, serious Rude, and punk-ass Reno sets her straight pretty quickly. Despite Rude's professional act from FFVII onward in the timeline, earlier in his career he and an AVALANCHE spy named Chelsea fall in love. However, that goes about as well as could be expected and after she takes off with the info he never sees her again. He doesn't make that mistake again, although he eventually develops feelings for Tifa. Those he keeps to himself (and Reno.)
The Turks are the most loyal to Rufus Shinra out of all the other subdivisions of his father's company and often their intentions clash with popular company rhetoric. Much of the Turk's activity is directed by Tseng who has big ambitions for the Turks, himself, and Rufus. The other Turks are aware of this, and follow his leadership regardless.
The Story:
Rude's first foray into Cloud Strife's (aka The Protagonist) story is hunting Cloud and Zack Fair] after they've been used in the Mako-SOLDIER experiments of Dr. Hojo. Tseng wants wants samples, but after Zack is gunned down by the military (also pursuing the pair) Cloud is allowed to escape so long as the army doesn't get their hands on him. However, later, Strife's Anti-Shinra activities with AVALANCHE bring the Turks' attention back onto him. The Turks impede him through most of his pursuit of General Sephiroth, but as it becomes clearer that the rampaging Sephiroth is a threat to the entire planet, the Turks offer meager assistance and step aside to let the big damn heroes do their jobs.
Rude's main role to the story of Final Fantasy VII as a whole is that of the occasional Boss Battle to impede the hero, but he has also been known to work with the hero's party when their interests intersect. Such as when the planet is threatened by meteors or the populace is plagued by a degenerative disease (or Elena and Yuffie are being held by a pimp.) In the sequel, Advent Children, the Turks work directly with Strife and his group to save the planet once more, motivated by the fact that Rufus has contracted the degenerative Geo-Stigma and needs the big damn hero's help. Rude and Reno's defining act is to assist Cloud in taking out Yazoo and Loz of the Jenova triplets by blowing them up.
Advent Children takes place after the mako-sucking electrical plants have been dismantled and the majority of Shinra's infrastructure has been destroyed. Rude and the other Turks have remained loyal to Shinra despite this. Probably because he's still the richest mofo in Midgar and they want to see his pretty face back on top so that it stays that way.
HOW DIFFERENT DO YOU WANT THE MEMORIES TO BE FROM THEIR CANON? Southern born in 1898, Rude faked his age and volunteered for the army at sixteen to serve in World War I. His battalion was given most of their training in France and most died in Bois-d'Hauze, Champagne. During his four years in France, young impetuous Rude fell in love with Chelsea, a German spy. She left France once she had the information she needed and they never saw each other again. First cut's the deepest, right?
Upon his return to the US, he remained in the military another 3 years but became frustrated by the lack of advancements available for colored servicemen. He jumped at the chance when he was approached for recruitment elsewhere. He excelled at breaking knees, so they gave him a few lessons in interrogation. He excelled at that too, and he just kept learning. Rude has been in a couple small gangs over the years. Some ended with him as the last man standing, funny that, but then he found his way to Fisk and has been plenty comfortable there for the past 8 years. Current age of 37.
PLANS FOR YOUR CHARACTER: ...Being a self-confident asshole who punches people. Also with added moments of awkward panfandom team-building hilarity. Possibly also some drinking, and by possibly I mean definitely.
SAMPLES
LOG SAMPLE:
His hands still smell faintly of explosives when he gets inside. It wasn't a big bomb, wasn't some stone melting testament to the power of chemistry. Just a little light show to annoy someone who'd annoyed someone. Rude likes the smell though, doesn't remember when he started to, doesn't dwell on it because it isn't important. Liking the little parts of what he does is inevitable. He's read enough cynical philosophy to know that humans can get used to anything.
He's not just used to it though, he likes it. That's why he does it, that's why he'll keep doing it, that's why he goes out for drinks afterward. He's not drowning it out: he's reveling. He'd told Red he could come along if he wanted, mostly because the guy's been a bitch since he got shot, hanging around in the lounge with a stiff shoulder and the loudest voice imaginable. (Rude is pretty sure he made the impetus behind the invite clear.) Newbie had gotten tagged because he wasn't dead yet and was within earshot while he was fucking with Red.
Rude sits back and orders his first drink, can't get the fancy stuff he really likes in a place like this, but if he pairs it up with a cigarette it all tastes the same anyway: ash and burn. He wonders, idly, if it was a mistake to invite his coworkers. They might show up just to spite him. He's surrounded on all sides by foulmouthed bitches with sharp teeth, he swears. Why the Hell would he bring 'em with off the clock too?
He purses his lips and drinks. Oh well, the company won't kill him.
JOURNAL SAMPLE: [Cursive script, a little chicken scratchy:] I'm looking for a new bar. Place where people know how to leave a man to his drink. I'm sick of knocking out some drunk punk's teeth every other round, got no patience for it. When a man's old enough to be your daddy, doesn't he deserve a little respect? Tough work getting blood out of a nice suit besides.
Shit.
Care to help a man out? It's been a damn long day.
NOTES: Back and arms tattooed like a sailor. Still says he works for the ‘Department of Research and Development’ of a private company. More bad ass than Jason Statham, less crazy than Riddick.
