Emeline and Barbados

(A small background on this story. Briana challenged me to write a poem or a short story with either the phrase "hand in hand, to the edge of the sand, but up to the ground beyond" or "his nose cried louder and louder." I asked her if I got anything if I completely the challenge and she said that she'd do a load of my laundry. Here's the result of the challenge.)

There were two young lovers and they always loved to walk the shore at night. Emeline was the fair young lady's name and Barbados was the young man's name.

Sometimes Luka, a small boy of about four years, liked to watch the two walk among the beach as they talked and picked up sea shells. Luka's favorite part of the night was watching Barbados help Emeline pick up the sea shells as he would hold her waist and she'd bend over to get the shells. Luka thought that it looked like great fun because sometimes

Emeline's feet would come completely off the ground.

However, one night, Luka heard a very loud sound that he did not recognize. He saw Emeline turn towards Barbados and give him a stern look. She turned away, but the noise continued. Emeline started to walk away from Barbados but he ran after her apologizing. He shouted, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I can't help it! It is just happening a I breathe!"

Luka laughed and laughed. He couldn't help himself.

Emeline stopped for a minute and turned towards Barbados considering his words. However, she then shook her head and started to walk away once again. As Barbados caught his breath, his nose cried louder and louder.

Barbados then tried to sing Emeline a love song. He could only remember the first two phrases and made up the third.

He sang:

Hand in hand
To the edge of the sand
but up to the ground beyond

Luka heard this song and he laughed as Barbados sang the last line.

Emeline heard the laugh of Luka and turned towards his window. At first, she started to get angry that this small boy was spying on her and Barbados, but then she thought that he was probably just curious and his moptop of black hair and enchanting dark eyes made him too cute. she was ready to go talk to him and forget all about Barbados.

Barbados followed at a distance trying to make sure that Emeline and Luka did not hear his nose.

Emeline knocked at Luka's apartment door and his mother answered. She asked if she could talk to Luka and his mother agreed. She had a great time laughing with Luka. As Luka talked to her, she realized how much she really did love spending time with Barbados.

About a half hour later, they heard the unmistakable sound of Barbados's nose. Luka looked deep into Emeline's eyes and wondered why she no longer wanted to be with Barbados. His little voice squeaked, "I only laughed because I thought a singing nose was funny. I think I'd like a girlfriend with a singing nose. Don't you love him.?"

Emeline sat and thought for only a few minutes. She then rose from Luka's bed where she was sitting across from him and talking to go to the door and meet Barbados.

Barbados had never knocked at the door, but the unmistakable sound of his nose always let Emeline know that he was outside the door.

She opened it, leaving the door open, and gave Barbados a huge hug. She covered his lips and her voice gently sang, "It's amazing what little kids can make you realize. I love you, Barbados."

Within a year, Emeline, Barbados, and their new little girl, Gretchina were visiting Luka and his mother.
