Valentine's Day for baseball fans

On the website for my favorite team: Pitchers & Catchers Report: TODAY"!

Yeah, I know. The Steelers won the Super Bowl 2 years ago. The Penguins are at the top of their division, even with Sidney Crosby out. The mens and womens basketball teams of my university are both nationally ranked, and the boys and girls teams of my high school are in the playoffs. But it's the team that hasn't even had a winning season in 15 years that's still my favorite.

It's because of this game. (Sorry, Yankees fans. But you still might like the book; it tries to cover both sides fairly.) It's because that's when I totally fell in love with sports, that pennant race and that World Series, and especially that game. I was nine.

In the comments to this post, someone called BigE sums it up: "Pitchers and Catchers report" is one of the most beautiful and welcome phrases in the language. Winter is almost over -- despite what Punx Phil says -- and the season of irrational hope begins.

Bucco fans like me aren't immune to hope despite all evidence to the contrary. Could THIS team of has-beens and never-will-bes give us a year to remember? Nah..... but it has happened before. The 1982 Braves were thought to have little talent and few prospects, but practically everyone on the team had a career year as they won the NL West.

Like I said, this is the season of irrational hope. I'm gonna enjoy it at least until the end of April!
