I have found a new show! And it is shiny! Well, at least a rough and dirty, Cap'n Tightpants-in-"Firefly" kind of shiny.
I decided to try it because I've always been a Donal Logue fan, and Michael Raymond-James looked very cute. I was not wrong.
I think I was hooked within the first 20 minutes. I'll definitely see where they go with this. Britt and Katie are pretty sweet, but I also love that they've started straight off with Hank and Britt's HoYay/hetero-lifemate stuff. ("Are you partners?" "We're only recognized in Vermont and Massachusetts.") They're taking it seriously, too. One of the best bits was Katie and Hank in the kitchen; they both care about Britt, and Hank obviously doesn't want the kid to have to go through all the shit he did.
The nascent long-term arc is also very promising, as are all the possible stories from Hank's life as cop and drunk. I like the melancholy chemistry between Logue and Rockmond Dunbar/Mark Gustafson. It's like a platonic version of what he's got with the woman playing Gretchen, and you know they're going to run into Mark over and over.
Two questions:
1) What fictional town in Southern California was that supposed to be? The initials were OB or OV, but past that I couldn't tell.
2) With them naming MRJ's character "Britt Pollack"....is it just me, or is that an intentional Tennessee Williams reference/Spoonerism? (I.E, "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and Brick Pollitt, famously played on screen by Paul Newman.) (And with the partners/"partners" subtext.....um, yeah.)
