Age: Over 9,000 6,000
Gender: Male
Species: Angel
Canon Used: Everything in the book, with a dash of headcanon to bring him up to modern day.
Appearance:
Not the most fashionable angel. Psychology:
Aziraphale gives off the impression of being quite thoroughly British, very intelligent, and quite gay. In reality, he's neither British (though it is possible that the stereotype is based off him, he is old enough) nor gay. But he is very intelligent. When it comes to... Well, anything, his mind is firmly set in the 1950's.
He's quite able to adapt to anything on the go, and very adept at coming up with any plan that needs to be developed. Whether it be something like making sure the Antichrist grows up to be neutral, or stopping the actual Antichrist, Aziraphale can figure out a way to do it. It may not necessarily be the best plan, but he'll come up with something.
Due to how long he's spent on Earth, he's become rather attached to it and it's inhabitants. As well as the food. And the wine. And the music. And most of all; it's books. He's taken to collecting books over the years. To be specific, he collects religious and prophetic texts that have been written over the years. In fact, his collection has grown so large, that he had to open a "shop" under the pretense of having somewhere to store them all. Because of having to do that, he became very good at discouraging people that actually wanted to buy one of them from him.
And though he's not likely to admit it in polite company, he is rather fond of Crowley. Having spent so long with him, it was hard not to get attached to him.
Other Skills/Abilities:
As an angel, Aziraphale has the basic powers of flight, creating miracles, and surviving without sleeping, breathing, or eating. Like Crowley, he's able to simply will himself sober. He's able to wield a flaming sword (that he keeps misplacing). He also is quite good with slight of hand tricks, and is very proud of the fact that he's able to do them with using his angelic powers (for the most part).
Other Weaknesses:
Other than his physical body having all the normal corporeal weaknesses, there aren't any to speak of.
History:
After the creation of Eden, Aziraphale was giving a flaming sword and the task to protect the eastern gate of Eden. He quickly "misplaced" it, but was not questioned about it again.
His task on Earth was to cause humans to do good deeds. At some point, he and Crowley made an Arrangement with each other. They would work in such a way that neither side won nor lost; basically making sure the world stayed neutral. And when appropriate, they would fill in for one another, because the work needed to be done, and it didn't really matter who did it, so long as it got done.
Through his "lifetime", Aziraphale collected books of all sorts. But he was particularly fond of all the different, rare editions of Bibles, and books of prophecies that had been printed over the years. He kept his collection of books in a "shop", but would only really sell a book if absolutely necessary.
During 1870, he took a class taught by John Maskelyne, and spent a year practicing slight of hand tricks until he felt he was very good at them.
Because of their Arrangement, the two agreed to try to influence the Antichrist (or, rather, the child they thought was the Antichrist). When they discovered their mistake, they rushed to try to find the right child.
On one of their failed outings, Aziraphale accidentally came into possession of a book by one Agnes Nutter. Said book was a very accurate book of prophecies leading up to the Apocalypse. But, because of his love for the world, he made an attempt to get Heaven to simply off the boy, thus putting an end to the whole problem. He was very disappointed when Metatron informed him that not only would Heaven win, but he was required to be in the battle. While trying to contact Crowley to tell him his discovery, he was rudely interrupted and accidentally sent throught the open line to Heaven. This unfortunate accident caused his precious shop to be burned to the ground. In an attempt to put his plans into motion, he possessed the body of one Madame Tracy (along with employing the human that had caused him to be in his ethereal situation) and sent them on their way to kill the Antichrist.
The Antichrist was having none of this Apocalypse nonsense, though. When he'd thwarted the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, and his Father was coming up to have a word... Aziraphale and Crowley stepped in to protect the Them and the other vulernable mortals. The angel picked up his old sword (earlier dropped by War), and advanced to stop Satan from unleashing his fury on innocent bystanders. All this was unnecessary, because Adam simply used his power to send his Father back to Hell.
After the Apocalypse that Wasn't, he returned to find his shop intact and filled with very valuable first editions of books that a young boy of eleven might enjoy.
At some point after all this excitement, he and Crowley moved to a small cottage outside of the city.. Where, presumably, they went about life as they had for the last 6,000 years. Aziraphale likely opened a small bookshop again, because he needed somewhere for his collection. And Crowley made sure they had the best garden by scaring the plants forever.
Canon Point: Modern day, after the end of the book.
Reality Description:
Modern day England, just outside of London. There is a quaint little cottage that he shares with Crowley.
Other than the existence of angels and demons, there really isn't much magic to speak of. The world is the normal, boring world that we all know... Except there are no longer any whales, and people are still trying to figure out where Atlantis disappeared to again. As neither Crowley nor Aziraphale really interact with any of the other characters, there are no important NPCs to note here. Death does not apply to them, and the other three Horsemen are simply tools of humanity. And Adam and the Them are being left alone in Tadfield.
First Person Speaking Sample:
Hm. Well, this is certainly... Interesting... [The angel mused as he stared at all of the glittering stars.] I never imagined that I would be seeing any of this close up. This can't possibly be a dream, because I know that I didn't go to sleep. But, I can't figure out how on Earth I came to be here.
[Bringing his eyes down from the sparkling heavens, he spotted the Information Desk.] Ah! Just what I was hoping for. Perhaps there will be something there that can tell me where I am. Or how I came to be here. [Walking over to the Information Desk, he spent some time perusing the available texts. After he's read through both (and thoroughly scoffed at Mr. Explosion's guide), he goes back to studying his surroundings.] What a curious place! I think I'll explore a bit before trying to go back. This does seem like the sort of thing that Crowley might like. Though... I wonder if he's already here? It would make sense that they would bring us both her at the same time... I wonder if anyone else has been brought here... [Still musing on this line of thought, Aziraphale wanders off towards the other buildings to see what there is to see.]
Third Person Writing Sample:
This definitely was not Heaven. But it wasn't Hell, either, if Crowley's descriptions were at all accurate. He was familiar with more than a few myths from around the world and across the ages, but he wasn't certain he had ever heard of something like this place. It was extremely unlikely that he was merely dreaming all of this, as he didn't dream unless he actually put effort into it. And even if he had, he wouldn't have come up with something like this.
His fingers slid over the mask he'd found himself wearing. It wasn't something he would normally wear, so he assumed there was a reason for it. A small sigh escaped him; he vaguely wished that if he were to be stuck with a mask, that whoever had put it on him had thought to give him a nice tartan one.
But, the mask was only a very trivial part of this whole strange situation. That mirror, now that was a very big, and very odd, problem. In it he could see himself going through his daily routine. But it couldn't be him. He was in this strange room. Yet, there he was. As far as he could tell, there wasn't even any sign that it wasn't him.
The thought that Crowley might be able to tell something was wrong flitted through his mind as said demon entered his shop. That hope was quickly crushed as Crowley went about carrying on a conversation with his body as if everything was completely normal. And perhaps everything was seemingly normal. His body was certainly acting how it should. Maybe he had gone mad... Though, that didn't make much sense. He had gotten through the Apocalypse That Wasn't without snapping, so there was no reason for him to now. Whatever was happening, he could kept watching. There was no real reason for him to move, as he needed neither food nor sleep. And there was the chance that watching may provide him with a clue on how to remedy this situation.
