I hate writing summaries and I don't want to give away too much of the plot and premise, since much of my delight came in discovering the details of the heroine's past and of the world she finds herself in. So I'll just pick the blurb off the back cover:

I liked Simon a lot, so I was sad to see him go. On the other hand, I was glad that the book didn't follow the common romance novel/manga trope of having the heroine end up with the first male character she meets and is involved with. (Actually, I'm not sure: is this a romance novel trope?) I also liked that Lisane and Detter could be bitter enemies with minimal sexual tension, despite Detter's extreme beauty.
Most of my moments of realization related to the King...the King, and Detter. Lisane was oddly accepting and admiring of the King, considering the way she reacts to Detter's later relationship with the instructor (ie, considers it a reason to feel superior to him, not that she needed another one of these). Yeah, I liked that Lisane and Detter were enemies/family without its being a big messed up sexual thing. Usually books either say, right, sex only if it is True Love and never shall its path be deviated from, or they have the heroine going around boinking everyone indiscriminately (I hear Laurell K. Hamilton is particularly guilty of this). I feel this book treads a middle way!

*interested* What did you realise?
didn't you know that the author is watching this community?
tarigwaemir mentioned it, but I did really enjoy the book -- I wouldn't have bothered writing up such a long review otherwise -- and it would've been difficult to figure out what was okay to say and what not, anyway. I thought I'd best be honest.
