The bad news is that I don't have a job at LS Ayers. Or anywhere at the mall, for that matter.
The good news is that I have a job on campus over break instead, as well as a job offer for next semester.
This break, I will be working at the SMC IT HelpDesk, for 3 weeks from 8am to 5pm, at $6.35/hr. It's what I'm making now as a ClusCon, but there are more hours and less people. And all it took was me walking into Kathy's office and asking if there was hint of IT looking for a student employee over break.
[Scene: Kathy's office in Haggar]
Me: Hey Kathy, is there any chance that IT is hiring?
Kathy: You have a job.
Me: I need one for Christmas Break.
Kathy: Ahhhh. Well, I know that sometimes we hire for the HelpDesk. Let me call Jill. *calls Jill and confirms that they need a student worker for break*
Kathy: Go to the Help Desk and ask for Jill. Then come back and talk to me for a minute.
Me: Ok. Great! Be back in a few.
*goes to talk to Jill*
Hi, I'm Erin. You just talked to Kathy about 30 seconds ago about a student worker.
Jill: Hi, come on in. *I sit down on a chair in her cubicle* So, you're looking for a job over break?
Me: Yes. I live in Elkhart, so transportation shouldn't be a problem or anything.
Jill: Great. When do you want to work?
Me: I can work whenever you need me.
Jill: I need to hire someone for 3 weeks over break - every week except for the one with Christmas and New Year's in it. 8am to 5pm. It's a lot of sitting around doing nothing for the first two weeks. The third week picks up as profs come back and start doing things for class.
Me: I'm availible for the whole time.
Jill: Great! Come talk to me during finals week and we'll double check to make sure that everything's ok. Otherwise, you've got a job during break. Pay's the same as you make as a ClusCon.
Me: Thank you! I'll come back in a couple weeks then.
Jill: No problem. See you then.
*goes back to Kathy*
Me: Hi, Kathy. I've got a job for Christmas now!
Kathy: I thought that she would give it to you. Now. Let's talk your current job.
Me: *breaks out into a small sweat* SHIT, what'd I do??
Kathy: You want to earn more money? What do you think about becoming an RCC (Residential Computer Consultant) instead of a ClusCon?
Me: ...*slight state of shock - Did she just offer me a better job?*
Kathy: [continuing] You've read the emails that I've sent out, so you know that I'm looking. If you email me that you're interested, so that I can put you on the list (we do this on a first come, first serve basis, after all), and interview with me, and you can earn more money.
Me: Uhhh....*bigger state of shock - YES, she DID just offer me a better job.*
Kathy: It's over a dollar pay raise from what you're making now, and you only have to work 8 hours a week. That's the standard, no matter what your FinAid statement says. So you'll make more per semester than you are now, with less hours.
Me: That...That sounds great.
Kathy: You'll also get paid training, and that's at the RCC pay level. Now, the deal is that if you sign on at spring semester, you have to work for a total of three semesters: next year too. I'm not going to hold you until your sr. year, because I know that things get crazy there.
Me: Well, you know how Ireland didn't turn out this year? I'm trying to go Ireland next year, at Cork. I'll have to take a leave of absence from the school, but Cork's better for me than Maynooth. So I (hopefully) won't be here next year.
Kathy: I can understand that. I'll swing you a deal: you work next semester, and then your sr. year when you get back.
Me: Sure. I can do that. *still in shock*
Kathy: Great. Email me so that I can put you on that official list. And we'll talk.
Me: *dazedly* Thank you so much for all the help...
Kathy: No problem. I've always told you guys, that if you need something, I'm more than happy to help you in any way I can.
[End Scene]
Apparently, assistance from Kathy includes offering me the equivelent of a PAY RAISE with LESS HOURS, as well as getting me a JOB on campus for break. Not to mention that I would earn more this semester as well, because of training. AND I'm garunteed a job Sr. year (well, I'm guarunteed a job as a ClusCon, as well...)
All of this means 3 things:
1. I have a job over break. And I can supplement it with working for Grandma and Duane on the weekends, as well as babysitting (I reminded Kathy of that - she sounded like she might take me up on that).
2. There is most likely a RCC position left, because Kathy's not the type to dangle something and then yank it.
3. Kathy wants me to work as an RCC, because she wouldn't have brought it up if she thought I was a lazy moron. If she wants me to work for her, that means that she likes, trusts, and thinks highly of me. Which are all very good things.
*dances* This is a good day.
