High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

I first watched the movie a few years ago completely unaware that it was, in fact, based on a book. I loved the movie, and so I had high hopes for the book. I always enjoy the books more than I did the movies, so I wasn't too worried about whether or not I would be happy with having watched the movie beforehand.

I found it boring. Funny at times, but boring. I think it was solely because, as I said, I had seen the movie beforehand. And while this has never been a problem before, there is a first time for everything! It took a lot of self-motivation to finish the book. It wasn't poorly written, the characters were really great, and the story was sometimes startlingly blunt ... it's just that I knew what was coming three pages before I got to it. There were no surprises.

If someone hasn't seen the movie, I would highly recommend reading the book. Then watch the movie, because John Cusack as Rob is perfect. As well as Jack Black portraying Barry. Per. Fec. Tion.
