Toronto to BUF to JFK: Bachelorette Party 2007

The 4 days spent in New York City for Lindsey's Bachelorette Party don't really seem that exciting anymore, now that I know I'm going to motherfucking Antarctica in February for 10 days! Details on that to come (re: best job ever), but for now, a summary of NYC. Select pictures can be viewed on my flickr. The set took me a while to arrange chronologically, but the story should tell itself. If you're friends with me on facebook, I'm tagged in some pretty hilarious photos that might be worth checking out.

Day by day trip highlights and select photos are behind the cut.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2
• met up with some of the girls at the train station
• traveled to Lindsey's house on the edge of town for melon drinks and BBQ
• shared a bed with Jessie (not the first time) who snored a lot (first time)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 3
• woke up at the crack of dawn to get ready
• packed up the cars and 7 girls headed to Buffalo for 11:40am flight to JFK
• got stuck with the middle seat on the plane between Jessie and Linz, but that's ok
• flight was short, my luggage is missing but we eventually track it down (it somehow arrived on the flight before us) along with another member of the squad (that makes 8 girls)
• take the subway to our hotel (a little rain, but that doesn't dampen our spirits) See FIG. 1
• check into the Buckingham Hotel on 57th St. and Sixth, comfy digs (microwave and toaster! no dead hookers in the mattress!)
• freshen up and walk through Central Park to meet Angela (girl 9) who lives in NY at the Guggenheim
• we pay what we can and check out the exhibits for an hour or two See FIG. 2
• head over to the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum where Angela works for Summer Sessions (Friday nights, dj, dancing on the grass, wine etc)
• check out the limited exhibition, all the girls get harassed by really strange (possibly cracked out) men
• walk to dinner, order 2 pitchers of Mojitos
• around 10pm it starts absolutely pouring outside, sit around for an hour waiting for it to subside
• take subway back to the hotel and sleep on a shitty pull-out couch, resting up for the next day

SATURDAY, AUGUST 4
• wake up at 7am to go for a run through Central Park with Jessie
• go back to the hotel to get the day started, meet up with everyone after breakfast
• walk over to FAO Schwarz, look at Harry Potter toys and the giant keyboard demo See FIG. 3
• spot a cockroach on the subway platform going to Battery Park area, walk around, head over to WTC site
• the girls look for hot men on Wall St., no luck on Saturday
• girls divide: 7 take on Century 21 Dept. store, Jessie and I decide to take in the rest of NYC
• walk by the Brooklyn Bridge, New York County Supreme Court through Chinatown
• check out back alley purse ops on Canal St., find some neat stores
• find Pylones, buy a pink/red cross flask that I don't particularly need See FIG. 4
• wander over to Union Square Park, eat some nuts (from a vendor, not a homeless man)
• Jessie buys a strange souvenir from a really strange walrus man (it's a real pot leaf hodge-podged into a seashell for some reason) See FIG. 5
• stumble upon the Village Market, feel like we're back in Toronto
• on the way to meeting up with the other 7 for dinner, we come across the Walbridge Mall monstrosity that we thought was real, until we overheard the owner of a vintage store across the street telling someone it was just a film set! (Apparently for an Adam Sandler movie) See FIG. 6
• meet up with the girls at a restaurant in SoHo, everyone has exciting stories to share
• leave the restaurant to go back to the hotel to get dressed for the Bachelorette party night
• the girls get PEED ON by a homeless man who aimed at a grate that splattered onto the subway stairs (just the tops of their feet...) I manage to be completely oblivious to the entire situation until we get down to the platform and everyone is talking about it.
• everyone cleans up and gets ready for partying - we were supplied matching "NYC Bachelorette party" wife beaters with pink iron graphics See FIG. 7
• no matter how drunk I get in the hotel room, I still feel completely retarded in the matching shirts/masks/beads
• much laughter and hilarity ensues in the hotel room, elevator, walk to the subway
• the subway to the Meatpacking District takes forever and we all calm down... a little
• we arrive at Hiro Ballroom to a huge line, bypass the line somehow, and get into the club
• dancing, sweating, creepy men, acrobats in swings, and fun ensue, obviously See FIG. 8
• 4 girls leave at 3am (my feet=broken) and 5 remain
• one of 5 girls proceeds to barf all over the bathroom, dancefloor, cab/other passengers... (not me, thank god my feet hurt and I left early)
• wait 30 minutes for the subway, get home by 4am, get to sleep by 4:45am

SUNDAY, AUGUST 5
• "sleep in" until 9:30am, wake up too sore to go for a run, instead 4 girls go for a walk in pajamas
• stumble upon an awesome street festival with some neat craft stuffs ie: Parable Ink clothing and Sushi Pillows
• go home and get ready for the day, girls set out for more shopping (ugh)
• Lindsey finally finds the right pair of gold shoes to match her wedding dress, buys them, more shopping
• team splits up, Jessie and I go to Macy's to look at swim wear (still too expensive)
• we find the old old wooden escalators on the upper floors at Macy's, we're completely enthralled See FIG. 9
• we look up and suddenly we're under the Empire State building
• R2-D2 shows up on a street corner, very confused and amazed See FIG. 10
• we wander Madison Ave, find a closed Library and rub shoulders with Nicholas Cage on the way to Grand Central See FIG. 11, 12. 13
• Jess and I spend a lot of time soaking up the gorgeousness of Grand Central, then find St. Patrick's Cathedral at 50th Street and Fifth Avenue which is also amazing See FIG. 14
• met up with the other girls for dinner - Serendipity was too busy so we had pizza instead
• went to Dylan's Candy Bar and looked at fun stuff
• walked back home, stopped off at the Apple glass store, played with an iPhone
• rode the glass elevator up from the store because guys were looking up Jessie and Sandra's skirts on the stairs (FROSTED/GLASS STAIRS??!! WHY) See FIG. 15
• relaxing at the hotel, getting ready for $15 martinis in Times Square
• walked through crowds to get to the Marriott which has a lounge overlooks the monstrosity that is Times Square See FIG. 16
• visited the awful M&M store 5 minutes to closing (midnight), developed greater hatred for retarded schwag
• walked back to the hotel, past the Ed Sullivan Theater/Late Show, went to bed See FIG. 17

MONDAY, AUGUST 6
• Jessie and I painfully wake up at 6am to go running to the United Nations
• the sucker is closed (obviously) and the flags aren't even up yet - Jess is sad See FIG. 18
• run through Grand Central again, pick up some apples, force Jessie to pose with some cops
• find the New York Public Library where Uncle Ben was killed in Spiderman See FIG. 19 and 20
• go back to the hotel and meet everyone for breakfast 8am
• Jessie and I head to the MoMA See FIG. 21
• rush to the design floor, then the prints/illustration floor, see awesome Dan Perjovschi work, run out of time See FIG. 22 and 23
• walk back to the hotel to meet all the girls in the lobby at noon, say our goodbyes and head for JFK
• fly to BUF, stop at Duty-Free to buy some alcohol and Toblerone, drive to Burlington, take the GO bus to Oakville, then GO train from Oakville to Toronto, subway then streetcar to my house (TOTAL: 9.75 hours! But nothing compared to Amanda's 36 hour Delta ordeal...)
• get home, eat the dinner that Matt prepared, cuddle, recap the trip, pass out asleep

FIG. 11 He has a larger head than I thought he would.

FIG. 12 I am obviously very excited by the grandness of Grand Central.

FIG. 22 Helvetica exhibit in the back corner :)

FIG. 23 I will definitely spend more time at the MoMA next time I'm in NYC - 1.5 hours was seriously not enough, but still totally worth it.
