(The) Bright Hue of Beginnings
Kai/Kyungsoo

Done with exams for school and entrance for univ. Hell week is finally over. For Pat, because the whole thing was her idea anyway.

It’s too cold.

Jongin thinks to himself as he tries to keep his teeth from chattering while answering question number 36 for reading comprehension. The air conditioning is propped against the other side of the room, turned on at full blast and he checks the last sentence of the paragraph again because he’s too distracted to think properly. There are goose bumps running across his arm and he never really liked the cold. Jongin runs a palm over his left arm before worrying the eraser at the end of his pencil as he reads another passage.

He makes it to number 58 and Jongin’s blinking at his test paper because the questions didn’t make sense and the passage was too long so he didn’t even get to understand everything-

Something snaps and Jongin looks down only to see his pencil lead broken and rolling off his desk. He lets out an embarrassingly loud squeak before inspecting the pencil’s tip. It’s jagged and absolutely useless so he scrambles around his backpack for a sharpener but doesn’t find any. He’s starting to panic because there’s only 10 minutes left and he still has more than 20 questions to answer. Jongin looks around and since Kim and Oh go a long way from each other, Sehun’s two rows away from where he sat, hunched over filling out his test. The proctor’s looking at him with her brows raised and it’s Jongin’s cue to start hyperventilating. The clock’s ticking down and he’s silently saying goodbye to everything, his dreams and future shattered because his pencil broke. A minute into his internal breakdown, someone coughs at him and Jongin looks up.

“Here. You can use mine.” A boy with big eyes whispers, handing him a plastic yellow sharpener.

Jongin gapes for a good minute, staring back at him. Oh boy, his eyes are big and round, kind of like a deer. He thinks to himself.

The boy coughs again and does a thing with his hand that reminds Jongin that he still has to sharpen his pencil.

“Um, oh yeah. Thanks.” Jongin whispers back while receiving the sharpener.

The boy gives him a small smile before turning in his seat to continue answering.

Jongin chuckles and peeks at his wristwatch. His eyes widen because holy crap, ten minutes left. He races off to the nearest trash bin and manages to fill in the next 27 questions in less than six minutes.

“Are you still alive.” Sehun deadpans, grabbing Jongin by the wrist.

“Yes, luckily, I still am. Despite answering 60 questions for Math. How we survived, I will never know.” Jongin answers while shaking his head dramatically.

It was after their entrance exam for the university (which took almost five hours by the way) and Sehun nods in agreement.

The others are already filing out the room, mostly with blank faces, probably because of the mind numbing exam they just had and Jongin gathers his things from the desk so they can go out for some bubble tea. The sharpener he borrowed from the guy sitting in front of him lay next to his pencil and he can’t help thinking that the stranger saved him from failing. He’s about to return it, words of thanks at the tip of his tongue, but then the seat is empty and as Jongin looks around, the boy left already. Sehun starts talking, something about his cat Moonpie, most probably, as they walk out of the room. Jongin clasps the yellow plastic in his hands. Maybe next time then.

“Oh dear god.” Jongin mutters to himself while staring blankly at his computer screen.

He blinks a couple of times before fishing out his phone. He speed dials 3 and waits until someone picks up.

“Sehun.”

“Jongin.”

“We passed.” The older boy declares as he pokes their names on the list with his fingers.

“Yes, I am aware.” Sehun confirms.

“Oh my god.”

“Oh my god.”

“When’s the enrollment?”

The heat is stifling and Jongin’s standing in line for the last hour with sweat dripping down his forehead. He uses his forms to fan himself and prevent himself from having a heat stroke. Jongin checks his watch and Sehun’s running late again, as usual, and he’s left standing alone in an endless queue of enrollees. He digs around his pocket for his phone so he can call Sehun and ask him where he hell is he but the line moves forward so he postpones it for later.

After the long wait, he’s finally clutching his schedule in his hands. He heaves a sigh because his first class is at 7:30 in the morning. Oh well. Might as well get used to it.

Someone bumps him from behind and Jongin turns around, only to see brown eyes peering at him in silent apology.

“Sorry.” The boy mumbles.

Jongin’s eyes widen in recognition.

“Sharpener! Hi!” He exclaims, flailing his long arms beside him like a flamingo.

“Huh?” The other asks in question.

“You’re the one who let me borrow the sharpener. I could’ve failed without it. Thanks!”

The boy laughs. “Oh. That. No problem.”

“I didn’t get to return it you, though. I have it here somewhere. By the way, what’s your name?” Jongin asks while rummaging around his backpack.

“Kyungsoo. Do Kyungsoo.”

“I can’t find it. Hi, Kyungsoo! I’m Jongin. What course are you taking?”

“Um, Biology.” Kyungsoo answers timidly.

“Ooh. I’m taking Psychology. And I think we’ll be really good friends.”

Jongin smiles, eyes turning into half moons, as he dragged Kyungsoo towards the cafeteria for something to eat.

(They don’t stay friends for long. Jongin confesses to Kyungsoo during the middle of first quarter.

Kyungsoo becomes Jongin’s boyfriend before second quarter starts.

Sehun calls Kyungsoo ‘sharpener boy’ throughout the whole school year, though.)

- An attempt at crack (?) I tried okay.
