political soap box, part deux

Nov 04, 2008 15:54

so, today's a pretty big day here in the u.s. of a. all controversy aside, it's pretty fantastic that we the people have the opportunity  to elect either a black man as president or a (crazy right wing nut job lipstick wearing, moose hunting, hockey watching, bible thumping) woman as vice president. i can't believe it's taken us more than 200 years to make this kind of progress.

or can i?

this is 2008, people. Since the signing of the declaration of independence, we’ve grown to a nation of over 300 million people of every color, race, religion and sexual orientation imaginable. we've got the freedom to dress up like this for halloween or any other day of the year if we feel like it. we can eat meat or not eat meat, say fuck or not say fuck, and read the bible or playboy and have calendars like, "the dictionary of corporate bullshit" clearly displayed on our workspaces.

we can't, however, get together and say, "you know what? i'm pretty glad to have been born in such a place. i think i can suck up having an extra 35$ taken from my check every month to pay off our national debt."

or, "you know, i get to love who i want to love. why shouldn't everyone be granted the same luxury?"

or, "what is it my business if a 15 year old girl gets raped and her family decides it would be in her best interest to have an abortion, even if i think it's wrong?"

or, "i think we've been in iraq long enough, thank you very much. time to start moving out."

some people call me a socialist and that's fine. but i voted, just like millions of other people will do today. now i want my free starbucks.
