First of all,
Happy Birthday V!
Dear V,
My love for you is unquenchable, you know that. However, much to my displeasure, I am unable to celebrate the day of your birth the way I would like, that is, with a fic dump. I do promise to write a couple more chapters of Rehab for you as well as answering a prompt of your choice, to be fulfilled after my nasty finals are completed.
To not leave you completely empty-handed on your birthday, here is a little snippet for you:
Usagi smiled indulgently when he showed up on her doorstep at two in the morning. Being that he expected her to scream at him for waking her, said smile threw him off guard a little. She simply let him in the door, dressed in what looked to be one of Mamoru's shirts, held up one hand when he moved to take off his jacket and shoes, proceeded to make two thermos's of tea (it looked like Rei's calming tea) and finally went into the bedroom to grab a pair of sweatpants.
In a few more seconds, they were back out the door with the thermoses in tow. Usagi's nonchalance during the entire procedure led Kevin to wonder just how many of their little group visited Usagi late at night for advice.
A few minutes walk led them to the park, where Usagi picked a bench and plopped down on it, before patting the space next to her. He sat down, feeling very much like a giant next to her small frame.
She didn't speak the entire time, and Kevin felt she didn't need to, the whole story about Mina and the fight and the goddamn tea kettle just poured out of him like a river pouring over a destroyed dam. She nodded at crucial points, winced when he announced the fate of the tea kettle, and patted his shoulder when he finished. After a moment of bringing a comfort that no one but she could, she spoke.
"Kevin. People..are like puzzles. Only you can't see the pieces, you can only feel the shapes of the pieces. When you and Mina-chan fight, it's like she turned on the light, and for a moment you can see everything. But you're too focused on how bright it is to notice that you can. You need to think back and remember what you saw when Mina-chan turned on the light."
She giggled in way that Kevin had come to associate with her knowing a secret, before getting up. She collected the two thermoses, gave Kevin a hug with a couple extra pats, and started to walk back to the apartment she shared with Mamoru.
As she walked, she looked over her shoulder, and for a moment she looked exactly like the Queen she was going to become. Before she winked and added one last bit to her metaphor.
"I understand Mina-chan's a bit difficult, her puzzle pieces are all different shapes, but I promise, the picture is worth it."
Kevin favored her with a rare smile.
"I know."
An hour later he was back at his own flat. She was waiting for him, the ugly leg lamp that she had found at a sale casting alternating light and shadows over her beautiful face.
"Usagi?"
He was stunned, but he covered it well.
"Yes. How did you know?"
"You smell like calming tea and night air, Usagi's the only option. And....you beat me by about five minutes, as Mamoru told me. He also said that he doesn't like waking up to find his wife gone."
Kevin smiled at the last. "Doesn't like" was probably the understatement of the century.
She got up out of the chair and walked to him, purposely leaning up against him as she whispered.
"Did she use the "puzzle" metaphor?"
He smiled again, a bit wider, repeating like a parrot.
"Yes. How did you know?"
She laughed a tinkling laugh, before grabbing his belt and leading him into the bedroom.
"Who do you think taught her that metaphor?"
Kevin laughed, and saw the picture.
