I went hiking today, leading my first trip for ECP. One guy showed up. Oh well; most of them are busy at the climb-a-thong anyway.
We went to Bear Run and did an 8-mile loop. Early on, Eugene just missed stepping on
this fungus. After that, there were no pictures: while the trail guide (and even the map I picked up today) promised views, those views have long since been overgrown. We could hear rafters screeching below on the Yough, but the place which was supposed to show us Dimple rock let us see a flat area, off in the distance. I saw some rafters drift into that area, but really, it's not very exciting to see people float in place.
Given that disappointment, the difficulty of leading an almost-blind man over a narrow, steep, rocky trail*, and the fact that for the last twenty minutes of the hike we got poured on, I wish I'd elected to take the shortcut. Nevertheless, it was still good fun. Oh, and I got caught in almost the same Pirates traffic as last Sunday when I drove
cdtwigg to the airport -- except this time it was post-game traffic rather than pre-game.
* his promised "light touch" on my arm to check where I was going would turn into a deathgrip when he stumbled. Which was fairly often on that terrain. Not that I can blame him, but it made things doubly tricky for me, needing to maintain balance for two.
