A different way to help: Operation Photo Rescue

Operation Photo Rescue takes smoke- and water-damaged photos rescued from homes damaged by tornadoes, fires, flood, hurricanes, and other disasters, and gives restored reprints back to the families. They're currently running a ChipIn fundraiser to help families in Griffin, GA and Joplin, MO.

Volunteers (do you know Photoshop? Would you like to volunteer?) do all the restoration using their personal computers, but there are still expenses related to website hosting, printing the photos, and getting flyers out to notify people that the service is available. This is one of those "every little counts." It's been a heavy month for me, donation-wise, but I chucked a couple of dollars at them, and spreading the word is free.

(Weirdly, Photoshop Elements turns out to be a much more streamlined tool for photo restoration than full-on Photoshop, assuming you don't need to do a lot of cloning over destroyed areas or perform the dance of the red color channel. Well worth the $80 and a bargain compared to $800 for CS5.)
