jazz police were looking through my window...

My birthday Thursday was lovely. It coincided with mermaidblue's one free night, so we met sibylla at Javamonkey for live music and wine. The sky was that perfect metallic cobalt of twilight and the air was dry and cool. We sat on the patio, where jazz was being perpetrated at ten paces.

I'd first heard the band, (dp)3, at Dragoncon last week. I had no idea who they were but when I heard the sound I was hooked. I took pictures of their concert but they turned out pretty lousy, as pictures taken under artificial hotel lighting tend to be. So I tried taking pictures again at Javamonkey, in the near-total darkness. I like the shapes and saturated colors of the results. They look -to me, at least - a little like the music sounded; skewed and abstract and rich.

Some I took from my chair in the patio with a zoom; a few I took by going into the coffeehouse and shooting through the window (the first one especially). Technical details: these were taken into Photoshop to adjust contrast, levels and saturation, and to crop for composition, but the only filter applied was unsharp masking. These are pretty close to the originals, except for the bassist shot; that's actually two images pasted together. I cut him out of a shot that was taken with a flash and laid it onto an image taken in the dark, then blurred and smudged it down.

Posting these, I look again and wonder if anyone else will appreciate them for the reasons I do. Aren't photos supposed to be mirrors? I don't need feedback, I'm just curious.

I need a photography icon.
