I, for all intensive purposes, am an independent contractor. This comes with great freedom- I make my own schedule, I can pick and choose who I work for and what jobs to work, I am pretty damn marketable...
but at the same time there needs to be work for me to pick and choose from. And sometimes the work overlaps...
I am a stagehand.
I work at RVCC where there is decent P/T work during the school year. They pay on time and have never given me a problem other than its less getting paid, and more getting a tip for services. I started there, and my boss/crew there is like family... but I only work there when there is nothing else available. My boss understands that this is the case, and loves me just the same.
I work at Kean. Or I did. They pay really well. When they pay. On average it takes about 6 weeks to get paid, as I am a Purchase Order (I am a tool, they pay to rent me essentially) Well the VPs of the college don't like signing off on paperwork, and since they were all on vacation off and on this summer, the last thing I got paid for was Pajama Game on 4/5/09. My boss there called me asking me to come in for some work. I had to explain to him that I can't come in until I get paid. Which sucks, as I love working for Mickey, and I love working for the crew there. Mickey agreed that it sucked, and ranted about how the system in place is driving his good employees away. I kinda want to still work for him as its fun, and in theory I will get paid eventually, and I don't spend money when i'm there. The last time it took lomger than 8 weeks to pay me the VP's said they'd get around to paying me eventually. Funny, my credit card didn't like that response much.
I work with IATSE 534 whenever I have to. They call me up as a last minute filler and I am ok with this. Their crew is mostly mysogonist male users who would rather tell stories than get shit done. I have tits, which means I know nothing. In their territory is a hemp house though, and I am sad I dont see it ever. (hemp houses are the old old old school of backstage with sandbags for the flyrail system. no, not every theatre has sandbags in the celing. in fact most dont)
I work with IATSE 632. (Giants Stadium, Izod Arena) About 1/3 of the regulars I see there are amazing, and I would kill to be considered good enough to work side by side with them. 1/3 are pretty meh, nothing special, but follow orders when given. The last third is a bunch of knuckle dragging mouth breathers who are there because they are selling to/blowing/married to the right person. Its disgusting how the local is run. The work line mailbox is always full. And the boss says he doesn't listen to the messages, he just deletes them. Instead he calls who he wants on teh call. which consists of people IN THE UNION who DON'T KNOW WHICH IS UPSTAGE! *facepalm* Needless to say, I am not related to, selling to, fucking, or blowing the boss, so I don't get called. ever.
I work with IATSE 21.(Prudential Center) They kinda rock and I have no real complaints overall aside from not getting callbacks. But the boss *gasp* answers the phone which is kind a big deal in my world now.
When working with 623 and 21 I often come in and shape. What this means is I come in an hour before we're supposed to be there and I wait. If they need an extra person, or someone doesnt show up, I get on the call. Often I'll get put on the call for the out, so I have the day off and work 1030pm-330am. However I'm not promised this time, and it doesn't always pay to do it.
Steel builds are building outdoor show (like giant stadium, or for the not locals, imagine the halftime show at the superbowl. that). I have been lookin to climb since I discovered the job. I have great balance and feel more comfortable in the air than I do on the ground most times. However it is very difficult to get in on being a climber. Until then I'm happy being on the ground asking a million questions about how to get in the air. Unfortunately its even harder to get on steel calls, involves shaping daily (for me) and it a pain in the ass. But if you get in you get in and its nice to know that you get a few days of pay rather than just one.
And yeah, thats what I do as a stagehand.
I am a GTA, or Gynocological Teaching Associate.
I am trained in how to teach 2nd and 3rd year med students, and nurse practitioners, how to perform breast and pelvic exams using my own body as the model. I teach a patient empowerment technique which has been utilized when working with rape survivors as well as 'well' women. Its a phenominal gig that pays well, teaches me more about myself, and helps to better womens health.
I work at UMDNJ Newark. I trained here to be a GTA . My boss here is amazing. And amazingly disorganized. She cares so much for the program and her babies that she will bend over backward for our comfort. However I get calls usually a couple days in advance instead of a schedule of upcoming dates. I just called her today to ask if its possible to give me a schedule of what she would like me to work instead so I can give her priority. Through her program I work at/with several hospitals in a couple locations spreading (heh heh) the knowledge. Unfortunately it takes about 6 weeks to get paid through this location, and I never know what I'm getting paid as it changes with how many students there are, what i'm teaching, and if the students are ours or another schools.
I work at UMDNJ Piscataway. My boss here is highly organized. Her husband is living in FL and she is here, and doesn't have a car to stay in shape and reduce carbon footprint, which is totally rad. Unfortunately she's more concerned about keeping the teachers happy than she is about taking care of the GTA's. This location babies the piss out of the students, and I really feel that some of the things they let the students get away with is repulsive. That being said, I also dislike how the gta's get treated. One of my first memories of working there was teaching 20ish students breast exams. I did the math and should have gotten paid about 3x more than I did. As I was leaving one of the other girls was in the hallway talking about how she had to teach 35 students. she got paid as much as me. Its fucking bullshit. But, its work, it pays well, and its 15 minutes from my house.
I am also an Standardized Patient with UMDNJ Piscataway. I am given a patient scenario to act out, and a group of students who pretend I am their patient. I get asked questions as if I were really sick with these ailments, and they need to diagnose me while treating me as a person, not an illness. This is made of awesome, but falls under the same issues of the Piscataway GTA stuff. Oh, I should also mention here that My poss at Piscataway loves to overhire so all the spots are filled. I have been sent home 3 outta 4 of the most recent times i've worked there as I am the closest, and its the least travel and bla bla (for reals, some people travel by transit from brooklyn. i'd feel bad if they got sent home, but I still have to look out for me) but that doesnt make it suck any less
And that is how my vagina pays my bills
I wanted to write to get peoples advice on how to choose which takes priority, but I think I've figured it out. GTA overrides steel builds. Production days(day of show) override GTA. Both override SP work. I think this makes the greatest sense.
