Chapter 22
Soundtrack: Arashi - Cry For You
Ryosuke thought he might have misheard Aizawa.
"W-what?"
Aizawa sighed again, straightened his back and said "Forget it..."
"No... wait... what do you mean?", Ryosuke asked confused.
"Nothing, just leave it, okay?"
"B-but... I don't understand..."
Aizawa turned around again.
"Fine... I'll tell you. I love you, dammit!" Ryosuke stared at him as he realized that he heard it right. And suddenly it made sense. Why Aizawa had kissed him, why he was so caring and everything.
They kept silent for a long time and Ryosuke tried to understand everything, but still he wanted to know why all of this happened.
And again Ryosuke spoke up.
"Tell... tell me about that day..."
"N-... no! I told you already-..."
There was no use...
"Then I'll... tell my dad about all this...", Ryosuke said and observed Aizawa's reaction.
Now it was Aizawa's turn to stare in disbelief.
"No..."
"Yes, I will... unless you tell me”, he promised.
As he saw Aizawa's face he was sure, he would get what he wanted and so he waited patiently.
It was so important to him to know what had happened.
"Fine. I'll tell you. But let me tell you another thing beforehand." He took a step back and said: "I don't love you. The Ryosuke I love is the former you and not that spoiled brat in front of me."
Ryosuke stared at him in confusion. His words hurt him, but he said nothing. He probably was right about what he was saying...
"That day... you... you broke down in the lockers' room and I examined you as you woke up again. You said your head hurt and that the rest was okay and then... somehow... one thing led to another and..."
"We did it...", Ryosuke finished the sentence in shock.
"No! No... gosh... we kissed... and only that. And I guess you... wanted to go on but I stopped and I said I'm sorry, and you somehow got it wrong and got all angry and shouted at me without letting me explain and then you ran outside and then Yuki found you outside, lying in the grass."
Ryosuke gulped at all that...it sounded so strange hearing that, like it had happened to another person, not him. And he could see how hard it was for Aizawa-sensei to tell him that.
He really... was a pain right? Making him tell those things...
"They told me to operate your brain but I wasn't able to do it because I've already... made a mistake... the last time I'd operated because of an similar illness before and... the patient died and... that's actually how I came here."
Ryosuke was silent for a while, before he said: "Oh..."
Everything was still confusing but...it sounded so... bad.
Aizawa looked at him in surprise, then focused on his hands and said: "Yes, that might be it..."
"I'm... I'm sorry...", Ryosuke then said. "For... everything..." And he really meant it. This all was a mess and it was partly his fault. And the worst was that Aizawa had to bear all the pain... that was not fair.
"Are you sure?", Aizawa asked.
"Yes... and... I hope your Ryosuke will return soon. For the sake of both of us”, he said and gulped. He really wished he could remember everything... he wanted to be the man that Aizawa loved and not such a brat... he felt bad and lost...
But Aizawa smiled and that made it a bit more bearable.
"I... hope so, too...Oh look, it's late. You better hurry back into your room. It's about time for your rehab."
Ryosuke sighed. He was right.. Even if he wanted to continue. It was enough for today.. for both of them.
"Okay..." and when he got up and was about to leave he noticed that Aizawa was still sitting in his chair. "Come on, Aizawa-sensei."
"No, I... have to finish this first." Aizawa smiled at him. "But... I'll see you for dinner, okay?"
Ryosuke blinked disappointed and left.
Two weeks later everything was almost back to normal again. But there was still an awkward mood between the young doctor and his patient.
After that day when Aizawa had told him the story they had been much more aware of each other and everything seemed weird.
Even this evening, Aizawa had examined him and then had left immediately. It was bothering Ryosuke a lot and the fact that he still hadn't remembered anything made him feel more hopeless than ever.
Would he ever return to the Ryosuke he had been? Or would he always be this new Ryosuke, which Aizawa-sensei hated this much?
It hurt him...
Later that night when the whole hospital was quiet, Ryosuke was sleeping in his bed but having dreams.
He saw the same images over and over again rushing through his mind in an uncontrollable speed.
A crying man, the rooftop, the locker rooms, his house... and he heard himself saying a name over and over again, while laying on his bed in his room at home. “Kousaku....Kousaku Aizawa...”
He felt the warmth of another person and heard a voice... and next as he looked up he saw Aizawa's face so close to his, his gaze unbelievably soft.
“Ryosuke... Ryosuke...”, he said and then he felt his lips on his.
Then another image. “...I shouldn't have done that”, said Aizawa and sadness and fury filled Ryosuke's whole body.
Then he felt rain on his skin and a pain in his chest and in his head... so strong, he heard himself shouting, shouting for that very man. “KOUSAKU!”
With that he awoke out of his dreams and stared into the dark room, cold sweat running don his forehead as he panted heavily.
He had to blink several times as he before he realized that he was in a room in his father's hospital.
He wondered why he was there... the last thing he could remember was the pain in his head and the rain on his skin and... Kousaku... the kiss... and that Aizawa had told him he was sorry about it...
After another free day Aizawa was on night duty again and therefore checked all of the rooms before he wanted to head to his room to do some papers.
The first few rooms were okay, but then suddenly he heard someone shout his name. At first he was confused, but then he recognized that voice. It was Ryosuke. And as panic hit his body he started to run.
Suddenly the door opened and the light flashed on, as Ryosuke's eyes had adjusted themselves to the light he saw Aizawa standing in the door staring at him in shock.
“Ryosuke.? What happened?”, he spoke and went towards him. Ryosuke jumped out of the bed, just to realize that his legs gave in a bit.
“Don't come near me!”, he shouted and looked at him in anger and confusion.
“Wh-what's wrong, Ryosuke?”, Aizawa asked, worried, and tried to come closer. The boy panted heavily and looked at him, terror in his eyes. What had happened that had disturbed him so much?
Ryosuke didn't answer, he just ran past Aizawa, through the door and along the floor as fast as he could.
He needed to get away from him, he couldn't bear being close to him right now.
And so he ran towards the nearest exit which leaded to the little park with the bench.
He didn't care that it was raining as he ran out.
Aizawa was shocked as well and so his reaction was too slow to catch Ryosuke before he left the room. What was going on here?
And suddenly it hit Aizawa like a baseball bat right into his face. He remembered. He remembered everything. That's why he remembered his first name and had looked at him like that.
And so he started to run. He wouldn't let him get away a second time.
Outside he was finally able to grab Ryosuke's arm, but the younger one tried to pull away violently.
As a hand closed around his arm Ryosuke tried to pull away, he didn't need to see Aizawa to know that it was him.
He tried to push him away, tried to get rid of those hands which tried get a hold of him. They kept struggling for some time until Ryosuke felt how he was pulled into a tight embrace.
He still tried to fight against it but as he felt those arms around him, he couldn't resist anymore.
As he pulled Ryosuke close he knew the boy wouldn't give in that easily. But he had to fight. He had to make up for the time he hadn't fought for his love, and now he'd make it better. So he didn't let go of Ryosuke even as he struggled to get out of his embrace. But luckily, Ryosuke gave in after some time.
"Ryosuke... you're back, aren't you? I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."
As Aizawa spoke up, he was confused about what he was saying. And still he felt the urge to run away, but being in the other's arms was just too good. He closed his eyes and sighed. "What are you sorry for, Kousaku? What?”, he asked in a low voice and tried to not sound as weak as he felt right now.
"For... maybe for saying that I'm sorry... But I'm not sorry for having kissed you. So please... please don't hate me... Ryosuke... I'm so glad you're back...", Aizawa said and smiled a bit at the end.
Ryosuke listened to what Aizawa said and the way his voice sounded really made him believe what he'd said. But one thing still confused him.
“Why... are you saying that I am back... Did I faint or something... I mean I woke up in a hospital room...”, he whispered and raised his arms slowly and laid them around Aizawa's back.
Aizawa looked up as he heard Ryosuke's question and as he laid his arms around him, his heart skipped a beat.
"You... you mean... you don't remember? Your tumor and... the months you've been here? My..."
Ryosuke was surprised at he heard what Aizawa said. “I.. I had a tumor? Have I been... in a coma?”
It was shocking... so damn shocking, but still he didn't miss the last part.
“Your... what?”, he asked and tightened his hold on the other as if needing to get more support and maybe he did.
As Ryosuke asked if he'd been in coma Aizawa just nodded and all he wanted to do is forget that quickly. Even though he'd probably liked that brat he'd been a bit... maybe.
As Ryosuke asked about what he meant, Aizawa stiffened a bit and paused for a moment, looking at Ryosuke's bare throat for a moment. Then he cleared his throat and looked at him with a serious face.
"I've already said this, but since you can't remember I won't refuse to say it again..." He smiled. "I love you."
It was as if time had stopped as Aizawa said those 3 words and Ryosuke couldn't other but stare at him. He was lost for words.
They looked into each others eyes for a long time and just in the moment when Ryosuke finally found his speech again, Aizawa's cell went off and the sound cut the whole atmosphere.
As he heard the disturbing sound, he wanted to take his little communicator and smash it against a rock. But he had no choice but to answer it, giving Ryosuke an apologizing expression. As the call ended, he said: "There's a patient having an heart attack... I guess I..."
“Go...”, Ryosuke cut him off and smiled. “Go where you are needed the most and after you're done... come back, ok?” Even if it hurt him, even if he wanted to give him an answer, he knew that Aizawa had to go. He knew that Aizawa wouldn't forgive himself if he wouldn't save that life and Ryosuke wouldn't forgive himself as well.
He knew Ryosuke was right, even if he didn't want to go.
"Then... wait for me, okay?", Aizawa said, leaned forward and kissed Ryosuke again, before he let go off him and turned around, heading for the patient that needed him more right now.
As he ran down the corridor, he suddenly saw Yuki and shouted: "Yuki-san! Go to the park and get Ryosuke back into his room, okay? Oh and... he remembers!" And grinning, he continued to run and saved another life.
His heart skipped a beat as Aizawa kissed him. He looked after him as the doctor ran into the hospital and Ryosuke couldn't help but smile.
He hoped that he would come back soon, because he wanted to answer him. To tell him what he never dared to speak out, to tell him what he still always wanted him to know.
Shortly after Yuki came out with an umbrella and accompanied him back into his room.
As he had changed and laid in his bed again, Yuki looked after the last things and then headed to the door but stopped.
“You know… When Aizawa-sensei told me to get you, he grinned. I never have seen him that happy before...”, she smiled and left the room.
When Aizawa's job as a life-saver was done, he let the nurses take over his patient and headed for Ryosuke's room as fast as he could without running. His heart beat became faster and faster and it almost stopped beating as he knocked at the door and opened it.
Ryosuke waited patiently and that although it was past midnight already. But he knew even if he tried he wouldn't be able to sleep now.
And as finally the door opened Ryosuke almost jumped in his bed. He looked at the young doctor as he entered the room and smiled at him while coming closer.
Ryosuke's heart beat fast in his chest as Ryosuke sat down next to him. “Hey”, Ryosuke said nervously but smiled.
As Aizawa came in, he saw Ryosuke smiling at him and finally he was able to calm down a bit after the hectic scene before.
First he wanted to sit down in his chair like he'd used to do it, but then he took a seat on the bed and said "Hey..." as well.
"How are you? Do you... want to talk about what happened?", Aizawa asked.
“I- I'm fine”, Ryosuke said and gulped. Why was he suddenly so nervous again? “Of course I want to...I mean... I”, he broke off and looked into Aizawa's eyes. And somehow that calmed him down. It was no big deal saying this now, right? Because he knew Aizawa felt the same for him.
“You know, I was very happy when you said that out there... because... I .. I love you too. And I want to be together with you. I want to live, together with you.”
Aizawa looked at him in confusion when Ryosuke suddenly stopped talking. But as he continued his heart skipped a beat.
"Ryosuke...", he whispered, hesitated for a moment and then took Ryosuke's hand. "I love you...", he whispered once more before he leaned forward and kissed Ryosuke softly.
Ryosuke responded immediately as Aizawa kissed him. He laid his arms around the others neck and pulled him down to him. They kissed for a long time and somewhen they pulled apart and Ryosuke pressed his forehands against Aizawa's. And he looked deep hinto his eyes. “I love you too..I love you so much..”, he whispered and pecked his lips.
When Ryosuke pulled him close, Aizawa was surprised at first, but then smiled into the kiss and laid his hand against Ryosuke's cheek, caressing it softly.
When they pulled apart to catch some air, they laid their foreheads against each other and Ryosuke told him that he loved him once more. Aizawa still smiled and answered: "You know... this is probably the best day in my life."
Then he sat up again.
"Is it... is it okay when I lie down beside you? Just for a minute or two... please?", he said, while he took Ryosuke's hand again and caressed the soft skin on it's back with his own thumb.
Ryosuke giggled. "Of course you can, but just for some minutes, doctor!“, he smiled and moved a bit to the side so that Aizawa would have some space.
Aizawa laid down beside him and they looked at each other while holding hands.
When Aizawa lay beside Ryosuke, he felt like the world stopped turning and everything was okay, even if it was just for a moment.
"You know... I already felt like I'd lost you when you couldn't remember me... but... now you're back. And I somehow feel like... this is not the end of something... like the end of your illness or whatever... But this is a beginning... for us... I love you..."
Ryosuke smiled at what Aizawa said. “I feel so as well... it's like the beginning of a new life. I love you, Kousaku.”
He kissed him again and then nuzzled against the doctor's neck and closed his eyes. The last thing he felt was how Aizawa laid his arm around him.
And then he drifted off into a deep sleep.
The End.
