Pridefest, Head Colds, and Mysterious Rumblings From Beneath

Jun 20, 2009 20:16

Today was Pridefest in Anchorage, and, as in years past, I went downtown to march with a contingent from my church. I love my church! Last year we sang as we went along, but this year I had a sore throat and couldn't strain it, and no one else seemed inclined, so we just waved madly and grinned at people. I helped hold the banner, and my darling husband waved our big rainbow flag (which is now gracing the front porch and will remain so for a few days to a week, or until the Fourth of July approaches, depending on whether I get to it or not).

After the parade, we wandered around the booths for a while, chatting with people we know and vendors we didn't know. We ran into a friend from years ago in high school and got to meet her husband and two kids, and talked pregnancy for a (long) while while watching people spin around in her moms' Orbitron (like a giant gyroscope you strap yourself into). It was fantastic. I had been feeling a little funny - some rumblings from the pelvic region that I did not recognize - and was a little concerned about how Baby was doing. Then, while standing there talking, I thought I felt something... odd. Something a little like the bubbly feeling you sometimes get when you're digesting food, but lower down and farther forward. I said, "I think... I think... I think I feel the baby!" When I described the sensation, the experienced mommies around me said, yup, that's exactly it! So... today was a Big Day!

Finally I was pried away from Mommy Chat and we headed back to the car, stopping to visit the Juneteenth party going on a couple of blocks farther down on the park. Then it was home for some lunch, after which we were going to go back downtown for the Solstice party in Town Square. Unfortunately for those plans, the cold I came down with on Tuesday caught up with me, and I decided (at my lovely spouse's strong suggestion) that yes, a nap really would be a better idea. As usual, he was right, as I realized when I woke up to find I had slept for four hours (and still felt tired). I may even have to skip church tomorrow. I really don't want this cold on Monday - I have far too much to do at work to still be sick!

Tomorrow is Father's Day, so we're having lunch with my dad, then an early dinner with my mom, stepdad and father-in-law. It will be fun! Happy Pride Week, Juneteenth, and early Father's Day, everyone!
