So there's a dark side in us all...

Tosh and the Doctor have commandeered a table in the common room. Several tables, actually, pushed together, as one does not have nearly enough space. On top of the tables are scattered computer parts that will eventually be Torchwood laptops - Tosh and the Doctor are in the process of working on that ( Read more... )

Liz is also in a extremely bad mood, as such she's abandoned her latest experiments and has gone in search of the Doctor instead.

Her purpose? Just seeing him would be nice but getting a list of exactly what's changed since her days would be nice too, just to avoid any other nasty surprises.

Like exactly what UNIT have turned into.

To that purpose she has been stomping around the basement for quite a while and has finally reached the common room... she stares at the computer parts with a trace of faint recognition and then steps forward with a determined stare at the Doctor "Hello."

The Doctor glances up at her and grins, turning away from the table - it's not as if building computers is enough to occupy his attention for long, but it had been something to do until something more interesting came along.

"Hello!" He pauses a moment, takes in her expression, and raises an eyebrow. "Did you need something?"

Tosh glances up briefly, but doesn't pay much attention, turning back to the task at hand in a moment. She would probably pay more attention if she knew who Liz is, but as it is...

Liz nearly snarls but bites it back just in time, and settles for casting a foul glance at the ceiling.

"Just tell me you didn't know" she finally sighs and then realising that this might not be enough of a lead looks back down at the Doctor "about UNIT and what they've apparently been doing lately."

If she knew Tosh was right behind her... well she'd probably have said it right out loud anyway, and then would have dealt with it.

As it stands Liz doesn't know and would probably be a little shocked to find out... it's a little too late now though.

Tosh jumps a little, and almost drops something, looking up at Liz again very briefly and then down again. Alright, now she's paying attention.

The Doctor barely notices Tosh jumping, his eyes on Liz. He... has absolutely no idea what she's talking about, and raises his eyebrows. "Ah... I'm not sure what you're..." Pause. UNIT. What's he had to do with UNIT lately? And what on earth could she be so upset about? No, he has no idea.

"You're going to have to explain a bit more."

Which basically means no, he has no idea. He was planning to make a phone call to UNIT, after all, talk them into offering Martha a job... and then he wound up here, of course, but that's neither here nor there.

Liz catches the jump out of the corner of her eye but dismisses it for the moment, there are after all more important matters to attend to.

"Well at least the Brigadier has retired... well I hope he's retired by this point..." Liz grits her teeth and takes in a deep breath He'd be ashamed if he could see what UNIT is apparently doing... well according to a lovely conversation that I had UNIT are locking people up without trials in 2008, UNIT are being thoroughly awful in 2008... and apparentlly for a good time before that too."

Liz glares at the Doctor, realises its not his fault and turns her attention to one of the computer parts instead.

She refuses to believe that anybody could have let something like that happen.. this is extremely mixed up in a very bad way.

"Oh, he has," the Doctor says cheerfully. He dropped by to see him, once... in his ninth regeneration... after he met Rose, before she agreed to come along... It was a long eight seconds. And then the rest of her little ramble sort of derails the cheerfulness and leaves it by the side of the road to die. His expression darkens.

"...What? I didn't hear anything about that. The last time I was involved with UNIT was... Downing Street. 2006. Granted, that's not exactly something you mention in passing, I suppose..."

He should have known it, though. If he'd known it, he would have done something about it. And now he's all upset over something that's happening in a different universe and he can't do anything about.

"Oh, good" she means it, though the sort of him settling down finally and being married... well that sends a rather strange spark of anger through her brain.

She's not jealous though, not at all.

"What happened then?" she snaps, sitting down with a rather loud thump on the armrest of the Doctors chair "did they lock a few people up unprecedentedly? Blow up a few things? Be a green version of the old Torchwood?"

She's not bitter, not at all.

He takes a breath, making an effort not to snap at her. It's not her fault. It's not, and she's probably been just as surprised by this as he is, whoever she found it out from...

"What happened in Downing Street? No. There was an alien crash landing... hit Big Ben, crashed into the Thames, some aliens masquerading as government officials... They shot a fake alien and were monumentally stupid, but that was the worst they did, and that's just typical UNIT idiocy." Shoot first, ask questions later and all that. "Downing Street did get blown up, but that was... ah... me. By proxy. So you can't blame them for that."

There was a pause and then Liz coughs "Right, sorry, they did usually blow things up... It's just I'm rather worried about the whole locking people up thing without trial... I mean even dangerous aliens got a vague kind of trial if I remember right."

Beat.

"So... from 206 onwards there was no 10 Downing street?"

Another beat.

"You blew something up?"

He sighs. "I didn't hear anything about that, Liz, I swear. If I had..." If he had, he would have stopped it. And he desperately hopes she knows it.

The Doctor pauses, looking vaguely guilty. Not, you know, much, but a little.

"Ah... it was rebuilt by 2008. And I didn't do it so much as... asked a friend of a friend to hack into the Royal Navy and fire a missile at it." Beat. "If it helps, I was inside the building at the time."

How on earth that's supposed to help is anyone's guess.

She knows it, Liz seriously doesn't think that even over seven lives the Doctor would ever lose his fondness for stopping injustice.

He has apparentlly gained the urge to indirectly blow things up, this has sent her into a mild state of shock.

She's Liz Shaw though, she snaps out of these spates fast.

"Hacking? Arson?" Liz frowns for a second and the nods "Possibly treason if you were a human? Doctor you appear to have built up quite a impressive record from that alone" she's starting to feel slightly angry, not least because the whole Silurian incident is only a few months in her past.

This is turning into another extremely odd day.

"It is not treason. I would have to be a British citizen for that to apply. The rest of it, possibly, but it was Downing Street or the Earth, so if you stop to think about it, I was doing you a favor."

He flashes her a grin, hoping to somehow fend off the anger by just being utterly charming. And he will not mention that he's taken to blowing up other things as well since he knew her. Weapons factories. Shops full of Autons. That sort of thing.

"No one was hurt except for the Slitheen, and considering that they were trying to destroy the entire planet..."

Tosh, meanwhile, is listening quietly, having mostly forgotten what she's doing with the computers. She never did get the full story of what happened there. This is filling in quite a few gaps in her information. And Liz's reaction to... everything is taking a bit of the edge off her anger. Not much, but enough that she's not glowering anymore.

"Well I suppose..." a doubtful frown "please tell me that you at least tried to negotiate?"

The charm won't work on her really, she's seen the Doctor at his worst, she's dealt with the Brigadier and being not only a scientist but also a ex UNIT employee she's learned that things trying to charm you are really things to run away from.

Not that she's let a slight form of paranoia effect her, not at all.

Just try not to let her near any cute and/or fluffy things, she might not react well.

He gives her a look that says, 'please, Liz, give me some credit'. "Of course I tried to negotiate. They wouldn't listen."

He's realized that being adorable isn't working, so he's just given up on it. Well, it was worth a try.

Liz gives him a look back that says 'You've changed seven times, I'm allowed to ask.'

"Slitheen?" is what she asks instead, with great restraint "I don't think U- we ever encountered them before, did we?"

Liz's solution to great big shocks? Interrogate the nearest sentient being.

"Nah. Technically they were Raxacoricophallapatorians, who are actually a very peaceful race in general. The Slitheen family in particular though..." He shakes his head. "Big, green, calcium-based, habit of zipping themselves into human skin suits."

He pauses. "And then there was Margaret. One of the Slitheen, and she went and got herself elected as the mayor of Cardiff. And proceeded to try to use the Rift to blow up the planet so she could get home, but that turned out alright."

Tosh rolls her eyes a little - it didn't take long to put together "Margaret", "mayor of Cardiff", and the Doctor's involvement. "Easy for you to say. The Hub went into lockdown because of the earthquake; we were stuck there for days."
