The TARDIS has priorities. How well they translate in linear time is variable, especially as she's used to multidimensional time and this "sequence" nonsense is still a foreign concept to her. But the priorities, at least, are clear.

One Desmond Descant is used to having things explode in his face- both literally and figuratively. He is not exceptionally bright and he does, in fact, tend to say things that might actually cause problems, which leads to the aforementioned exploding.

He's still recovering from that and hoping that there's some shred of something left that might get himself, the Doctor, and Martha back together the way they were.

Due to the fact that he's so lost in those thoughts, he actually walks past the TARDIS without really noticing her until a few seconds after the fact. This causes him to freeze, turn his head to make sure that he wasn't just imagining the blue box in the middle of the room, and then walks back, tilting his head to the side to regard her (or it, rather, as that's how she's going to register in his head) with a confused look.

"I know Jack was considering doing some redecorating, but this is ridiculous," he mutters to no one in particular. After all, random blue boxes aren't sentient... Riiiight?

The TARDIS scans him over. Scans him again for good measure. Verifies him against her earlier scans, and comes to the conclusion that his condition has degraded. Then, without introduction, she beams a line of thought directly into his mind.

Des jumps, looks around the room, realizes there's no one else here, and then, very slowly, turns his head to regard the TARDIS with a look of utter confusion.

"Please tell me that wasn't you in my head, because I don't have time to go crazy..." He pauses, frowning. "And I'm not really helping that matter by talking to you right now, so I'm just going to walk away."

Well, he can certainly try.

The TARDIS responds to that by teleporting into the doorframe, with the door still open, and changing shape into a brick-face wall. Hey, it's proven an effective strategy in other instances.
