There's a guy lounging on a lawn chair, set up on a street corner, a crate set in front of him like a table. He's got a deck of cards that he's shuffling, and he's calling out every so often to passer-bys who look like they might be game ( Read more... )

Regulus really shouldn't be out, after Brando warned him not to go out alone so fresh from the rift. No matter, he wasn't going that far from the hotel. And then, he sees a rather tall, thin man sitting in front of a crate.

Cocking his head to the side, Regulus thought about sitting down but wondered if he was a hustler.

"Hi," Regulus said shyly. He really could keep walking, but really, it didn't hurt to make new friends.

Jacob looks up, turning his full attention on the boy. The shy greeting is amusing, but he pulls the smirk back into a friendly smile and a wave.

"Hi yourself. Want to play a game?"

Somewhat single-minded? Only sometimes. Now just happens to be one of those times.

"I don't know..." Regulus asked suspiciously. "You're not a hustler or anything are you?"

"Me? God, no." Jacob laughs and shrugs. "Just bored and looking for something to do. Maybe get to know some people."

With his best innocent look (which is, it must be said, a pretty damn good act), he adds, "You don't even have to play for money, if you don't want."

"Well, I don't know," Regulus said hesitantly. "I don't have any money. And...I don't know if I know any of your games..."

"What games do you know? I probably know them. I've played just about every game invented. And if I don't, you can teach me."

He leans forward, partly teasing, partly sincere (fake sincerity, anyway; it's rare Jacob's honestly sincere), and possibly even partly flirting, for the hell of it. "Come on, keep a stranger some company for a hand or two. You've obviously got nothing better to do, or you wouldn't still be talking to me."

Regulus bit his lip nervously before sitting down, "A-all right, I guess. Well, I mean, I guess I'm all right at Blackjack..."

"Excellent." Jacob starts dealing, not giving him a moment to change his mind. "So, you're obviously not from around here. Where'd you come from?"

"I'm from London," Regulus said as he considered his cards.

"Nice place, London. Some interesting people." Not that Jacob's definition of interesting always matches up with the rest of the world. "Hit?"

"It is," Regulus said. "I did prefer the Scottish countryside a little more though. Yes, hit."

"Seven for you, dealer hits, four. I've only passed through Scotland, never actually stopped there. Looked pretty nice. Hit or stay?"

"Hit. Oh yes, Scotland is nice, I went to boarding school there."

"Sounds boring. School's such a waste of time. Four."

Regulus grinned wryly, "Well, I assume mug-er regular school is boring, but I loved my boarding school. Hit."

"Well, whatever floats your boat. Jack and that's a bust. Tough luck." He grins and settles himself back in his chair. "Doesn't look like you've been out of school long, yeah?"
