Sam didn't go to the funeral or the party, and has mostly been staying quiet and out of the way, doing what he can to make the plans Jack asked for, and waiting to speak to Gene until he's certain he won't shout, because all their conversations have gone down that direction so far and he's getting a bit tired of it.

But he has to eat at some point, and as luck or fate would have it, he's heading to the cafeteria just in time to catch Gene stalking toward the elevator.

Something in his hindbrain recognizes the way Gene's moving. The expression on his face. The fact that he's armed. His heart jumps into his throat. And without thinking, Sam speeds his pace to catch up with him, grabbing Gene by the shoulder and pulling him around to face him.

"Where are you going?"

"To do some good around here." He leaves it at that, doesn't even bother elaborating, doesn't acknowledge Tyler beyond that simple statement, just pushes him aside and continues on his way.

He doesn't allow his expression to change. Doesn't let anything show. Even if his heart clenches a little, well... Probably just that the thing's giving out on him after all this time. Bound to happen someday. All the more reason to hurry.

Sam's heart sinks a little, because he'd been expecting and dreading that answer all at once. Isn't that just like scene, charge off and try to play the hero, all glory and certain death, leaving behind any trace of logic or sanity...

Gene only gets a few steps away before Sam lunges forward, placing himself between Gene and the elevator in a way that suggests he's not about to be moved. Not that Gene couldn't force him to move if he really tried, but not without a fight.

"No, you're not. Not alone and not like this. Not when your idea of 'doing some good' involves kicking in some heads and getting yourself shot."

Except some of the things out there wouldn't even need to shoot him. A demon could just break his neck, probably without any trouble at all. And some of the creatures from through the Rift could do much, much worse than that. Sam thinks of the judge, thinks of what it did to Jack, and suppresses a shudder.

"Out of my way, Tyler." The nice thing about being human is that as a human, he knows how to keep things back. His expression doesn't change. He'll go through Tyler if he has to.

"You don't get to tell me what I can do with myself. Don't get to stop me from doing the one useful thing I know how to do. If I'm to rip someone's throat out, better be the ones that deserve it. Now move, before I move you."
