Mathias has not seen Des in a couple of days.
This makes him sulky. Now, he realizes he's been really anti-social lately, but... whenever he's with Des, he hears about Martha, or the Doctor, or Becky, or one of the various other people Des has become attached to slash protective of.
It really makes him feel like he's a bit superfluous.
Plus he's not sure if Des is really comfortable around him at the moment, what with the whole... not dying thing.
So he's in the cafeteria with a slice of apple pie a la mode in a bowl, the rest of the apple pie, and a gallon of vanilla ice cream.
