ah, let us mourn, for never morrow shall dawn upon him...

As the clock chimes its twelfth hour and midnight descends upon Chicago, so, too, does something else.

The man who suddenly finds himself in the Kashtta's barricaded hallway is dreadfully pale, painfully gaunt, and utterly bewildered. His suit, once fashionable and expensive and ( Read more... )

Neal was headed back towards his rooms when it happens. His mind is filled with facts and notes and various bits of information that he's still trying to learn. At this point, a lot of what he's reading is just refresher, stuff that he needs to make double and triple sure are true since he's lost any real contacts he had from before.

But then something stops him, that scream and his hands have gone white with how hold they're holding onto the railing and his breath shakes just a little when he breaths again. It shocked him more than anything and, after a moment, he's off at a dead run, looking for whatever the hell i8t is that could have made such a sound ( ... )

Jo Harvelle is a hunter.

This kind of thing is right up her alley, and she wasn't asleep when she heard the sound. In fact, she was returning from one of her cases, which would be awfully similar if she knew anymore about what happened tonight.

It involved a haunting, so she has some of the proper equipment for it.

She's got her flashlight, and she's inspecting the hallway Neal ends up in, and EVP recordings to see if she can capture anything. Whatever that was, it was creepy and supernatural, and she's going to find out what it is.

Jo turns to him, flashlight in hand. "I'm guessin' you heard that, too?"

Neal is not a hunger. Neal is much more accustomed to being hunted rather than anything else. He has some very talented skill with tracking objects but people are less within his skill sets.

He can hear someone moving in the hall before he turns it and he's almost grateful. Either it might be someone who has answers or it's someone who needs help.

Or it's someone who has no idea what's going on but he's trying to stay positive.

He nods, looking at her curiously. He recognizes the equipment only because of Mozzie. "Yeah, I did. I can't tell you where it came for, I think it was...everywhere." He smiles weakly. There would be concern with how he's saying it if she hadn't heard it too and well, they are in the middle of a haunted house.

"That's what's weird about the whole thing," Jo says, almost in a murmur, lifting up the equipment to see if she gets a reading on anything. The noise is gone and so seems to be the case with anything else that lingered.

"Everyone heard it as if it was right next to 'em, and we sure as hell weren't all in the same place at once."

With the Rifts, one can't dispel anything as impossible.

"I'm Jo," she adds, giving him a thin and worn but genuine smile. "The place sure knows how to keep us on our toes, huh?"

"Something's weird in Chicago?" he laughs. "I would have never thought such a thing could happen."

"Neal," he smiles at her, then looks around. "That's definitely one way of putting it."

he looks around the as if doing it enough would clear up what just happened to them. "There's not really much we can do until that happens again, is there?

He bother assuming it won't. The city isn't that nice to them.

Jo turns to him at the sound of his laugh. A smirk curves on her lips and she tilts her head sideways in acknowledgement. "Touche."

There's never a boring moment in Chicago, that's for sure.

"Nice to meet ya, Neal," she says with a nod, lowering her equipment and giving a small sigh.

"Guess you're right. Just bugs me to know there might be something skulking around and we can't get rid of it immediately."

"At least you're on alert now," he offers with a shrug. "You'll be ready for it next time."

He looks down the hall and sighs, giving a sigh. "Hey," he says with a smile. "I was going to go downstairs and get a cup of coffee, do you want to join me? Or are you hang around here to see if it comes back again."

A moment after, he adds. "If it's anything, I'm pretty sure we'll be able to hear it, wherever we end up."

And somewhere in Neal's mad dash, he nearly barrels into Mio, who is going to investigate the disturbance in a slightly more prepared sort of way (and also with a gun, Neal may note). She manages to step to the side just in time to avoid a collision. "Careful!" she yells out.

He skids to a halt, looking back at her with an apologetic expression. "Sorry," he says, "There was..." But he realizes the noise is gone and blinks.

"Did you just hear something?"

"No problem," she says. "I just don't want anyone to get hurt."

Mio grimaces slightly at the mention of the noise. "If you mean that psychic wailing, then yes, only too loudly."

The combination of Roger's cries and the Kashtta's "encouragement" to go investigate them had given her a rather nasty headache. Thankfully, it was starting to fade, or she would have been in a lot grumpier mood right now.

"Yeah," he agrees. "Of course. It was probably a bit of an overreaction, I just can't help it though, I hear someone scream and I just can't let ti sit." He laughs a little. "It's not much of a survival technique around here but I've done well enough so far."

Ne nods, studying her for a moment. "Are you all right? Do you need to si8t down for a moment?"

Neal will count his blessings because meeti8ng a pissy Mio along with crazy screamings is just no way to spend a night, none at all.

"I'm fine, and no, but thank you for asking," she responds. Mio's reluctant to admit weakness to people she's close to, so of course she's not going to tell Neal anything. Besides, as far as headaches go, this one is only moderately annoying.

Mio appraises Neal. "Do you have any kind of training or expertise in dealing with unusual situations?" she asks in a slightly dubious voice.

Based on the way he was attempting to run headlong into a potentially dangerous situation, she's guessing no. And it doesn't seem like he's carrying a weapon either, from the looks of things. If that's the case, Mio really doesn't think much of Neal's self preservation instincts. (On the other hand, she does very much approve of his suit, but that's not relevant to the situation at hand.)

And he has no reason to push her, so really it works out for the best. Perhaps one day but not right now.

"It depends on your definition of 'unusual'," he admits with a shrug. "I'm a bit out of my depth with Chicago's brand of it though, I'll admit that." Why no, he didn't have a plan if he ran into something but he would have come up with one! Maybe.

His self preservation instincts can, on occasion, be up nfor debate. He likes to think they're perfectly acceptable but others would disagree. He does, however, get very, very lucky sometimes, which probably doesn't help matters but has worked in keeping him alive.

"Well, then I would suggest that you try to stay out of the way and let those better equipped to deal with paranormal events investigate and resolve the problem," she says, careful to keep her tone mild. "I suspect the situation will be tricky enough to deal with without having to add daring rescues to the mix." Especially since she'll most likely be the one making any daring rescues. Her day sucks quite enough already, thank you very much.

Oh, he is well aware that she is trying to keep her tone mild and there's a small part of him that is vaguely tempted to antagonize that but he holds it back because she has not done anything to him personally and he has no reason to be bitter at a stranger.

"I'm sorry," he says. "I really am. I didn't realize it was paranormal. I just heard someone screaming and I didn't know what was going on. I thought I should see if I could help and, if not, see if I could find someone who could. That's all i was trying to do."

"Well, you found someone," Mio says, ever so slightly snarkily. "My name's Mio. I'm the head of Torchwood, which means that it's my job to deal with things like this. And a bloody lousy paycheck it is too, considering." She gives him a bit of a crooked smile. She complains about all the bullshit she has to deal with, but she loves it anyway.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I really do have to go see what was going on with that moaning and screaming. I'd love to meet again some other time under better circumstances. For one thing, I haven't had time to properly admire your suit. Wonderful tailoring."

She dusts herself off a bit before giving Neal a little wave. "Sorry, got to go now. Bye!"
