[ooc: This is the Judgement Day plot we talked about in
eatmybrainrp! All posts relating to that plot should go here. Feel free to make up events, like having your characters try to run for higher ground or getting swept away by giant tsunami waves coming in from Lake Michigan. Just remember the theme of the day is destruction by water. Have fuuuuuun! :D]
Robert Frost once wrote a poem that said, "Some say the world will end in fire,/Some say in ice." However, Chicago, being it's usual self, has chosen a different option to end the world today. Here in Chicago, the world is ending (for now) by water!
The morning dawns as a clear spring day, but around lunchtime, the Rift suddenly spits out a huge hurricane into the middle of Lake Michigan. Winds start to blow at 100 miles an hour, knocking down trees and power lines, and a torrential downpour begins to fall. Unable to handle the sudden influx of water runoff, the Chicago River quickly overflows its banks. Along the coastline of the lake, huge tsunami-like waves crash onto the shore with incredible force, sweeping away anything in their way.
With nowhere else to go, water floods the streets, causing traffic jams and accidents. Many people abandon their cars on the road and try to get inside the nearest building for shelter. But even the buildings aren't completely safe. Many buildings' basements and lower floors are beginning to flood as well. People try to stop the water with sandbags and barriers, but to no avail. The only thing they can do is get to higher ground and try to wait out the storm.
Finally, on the morning of the 22nd, the rain lets up. The water slowly recedes, the clouds clear and the sun begins to shine again like nothing just happened, but the destruction the storm caused is real. Windows have been broken and debris litters the streets. A few bodies even wash up on shore over the next few days, but many of those who were swept away are never seen again.
But for those who have survived, life moves on, even after the sudden watery apocalypse. A few jaded citizens weren't even aware that an apocalypse happened. They just thought it was Saturday.
